Five big productions will take centre-stage in National Theatre Wales' fifth season of work, announced this week. The productions reunite the company with some old friends, and introduce some new ones. They were announced in a series of digital messages sent to mobile phones throughout the week (2-6 March 2015).
The Off-Broadway League has announced details for the 2015 Lucille Lortel Awards, which will celebrate 30 years of recognizing Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway. The 30th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards will be handed out on Sunday, May 10, 2015 at the NYU Skirball Center, beginning at 7:00 PM EST. The program will be co-hosted by Emmy Award Nominees Jesse Tyler Ferguson ("Modern Family") and Anna Chlumsky ("Veep," Broadway's upcoming "Living on Love").
The unique performing arts intensive will take place at the Dallas Convention Center (600 South Griffin Street, Dallas, TX) Tuesday, March 10 - Saturday, March 14, 2015. The five-day intensive will culminate in a unique Broadway-style concert event featuring performances by Dallas' brightest rising stars on Friday, March 13, 2015 at 8 p.m.
At first glance, the musicals THE COLOR PURPLE, CALVIN BERGER, and LA CAGE AUX FOLLES may not seem to have much in common. The settings couldn't be more different - the rural South in the early 20th century, a modern day high school, and a drag club in 1970s France. But since I happened to see them all on the same weekend, I couldn't help but draw parallels between them. All three musicals all speak to themes of beauty, identity, self-worth, and having the courage to be who you really are, despite what the world is telling you. In THE COLOR PURPLE, a young, poor, black woman is told that she's ugly and worthless, but after a lifelong journey she arrives at a place of strength and self-love. CALVIN BERGER sets the classic play Cyrano de Bergerac in a modern high school, where a young man feels that his large nose prevents him from getting what he wants in life and chooses to hide behind the handsome popular guy, both of whom eventually learn it's better to be loved for who you are. Finally, in LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, a middle aged man who feels more comfortable dressed as a woman is asked by his own son to hide who he is, but confidently declares 'I am who I am!' Another thing these three musicals have in common is that they can all currently be seen on Twin Cities stages featuring talented local casts. WAM (Women's Action Movement) Theatre is gearing up for its most ambitious and daring fall production: the New England premiere of Winter Miller's timely drama, In Darfur. Preparations come on the heels of WAM Theatre's enlightening fifth-season celebration, Change Makers, during which Artistic Director Kristen van Ginhoven announced that Mother of Peace Ilovo, an orphanage in South Africa, will be the beneficiary of WAM's 2014 philanthropic donation. In Darfur will run from October 30 - November 16 at the Berry Family Studio at Shakespeare & Company, where tickets are now available for purchase. Opening night is Saturday, November 1.
Happy Birthday Tony Kushner! Kushner's best known work is Angels in America, a seven-hour epic about the AIDS epidemic in Reagan-era New York, which was later adapted into a miniseries for which Kushner wrote the screenplay. His other plays include Hydriotaphia, Slavs!: Thinking About the Longstanding Problems of Virtue and Happiness, A Bright Room Called Day, Homebody/Kabul, and the book for the musical Caroline, or Change. His new translation of Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children was performed at the Delacorte Theater in the summer of 2006 starring Meryl Streep and directed by George C. Wolfe. Kushner has also adapted Brecht's The Good Person of Szechwan, Corneille's The Illusion, and S. Ansky's play The Dybbuk.

Actress Susan Sarandon and Filmmakers Thomas Morgan and Jonathan Bricklin announced the launch of their film company, Reframed Pictures, at the Sedona International Film festival today. Reframed Pictures mission is to create and support films that are not only entertaining, but also raise awareness about human rights and social justice issues. But Reframed Pictures plans to take awareness raising one step further by creating opportunities for action associated with each film.
