When I was first approached by Giles Foden to adapt his 1998 novel for the stage, I was unsure how to respond. I'd seen Kevin MacDonald's fine movie version in 2006 and wondered what a theatrical version could add to it. So I went back to Giles's novel and found myself gripped by his account of Ugandan history and the complexity of Idi Amin Dada, its nightmarishly charismatic President from 1971 to 1979. Giles constructed Nicholas Garrigan, Amin's physician, out of a number of real prototypes, ranging from rogue diplomats to mercenaries. What gripped me from the outset was the core psychological drama exploring friendship, charisma and denial in the face of atrocity. 

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced its inaugural presentation of visual art to be featured at the REACH, the Center's 21st-century expansion project. Ten works in a rich diversity of media will be on display at the facility upon opening, including six pieces on loan from Glenstone Museum in Potomac, Maryland; sculptures by Joel Shapiro, Deborah Butterfield, and Roy Lichtenstein; and a wall hanging by Sam Gilliam. All works will be on view for the public beginning September 7, 2019.

The French Institute Alliance Fran aise (FIAF), New York's premier French cultural and language center, today announced the 2019 Crossing the Line Festival, featuring 11 performances and a gallery exhibition from a geographically, generationally, and artistically diverse group of artists whose work transcends genres and boundaries. All performances are world, US, or New York premieres; they are united by their convention-breaking fearlessness as they confront topics from social injustice to personal demons. Many of the performances pay homage to legendary artists of our time and previous eras, while the theme of migration and its transformational effects on identity informs several others. Meanwhile, Marcos is alone in Mexico, working as a soccer referee, struggling with depression and fighting the urge to cross the border illegally to see his family. With his signature raw, unfiltered intimacy, Sutherland weaves a parallel love story that takes us into a world often lived in the shadows. When Elizabeth's efforts hit a legal brick wall, she must plan for the unthinkable alternative: leaving the US with her children to live in exile in Mexico. ONCE is a perfect gem of a musical that has found a home at The Segal Centre for Performing Arts. In 2006, writer and director John Carney recruited his long time friend and former bandmate Glen Hansard to write songs for his indie film, which was being produced on a shoestring budget. Due to a series of what could have been perceived as unfortunate events, Hansard took over the male lead opposite Markéta Irglovà, who was also composing songs for the film. The resulting film is both true to life and magical and easily one of the best romantic comedies of a generation. ONCE took home the Audience Award at Sundance before going on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song for Hansard and Irglovà's Falling Slowly.

Mercury Chamber Orchestra opens its 2018-19 Neighborhood Series this October 20 - 25 with Johann Sebastian Bach's spirited Brandenburg Concerto No. 5. Featuring not one, but three instruments - the flute, violin and harpsichord, it is the only one of the six Brandenburg Concerti in which the harpsichord has a solo part. Written for a smaller ensemble, but with symphonic proportions, this sublime work features musicians playing both leading and supporting roles in an ever-changing pattern of give and take.

On World Refugee Day, public television's WORLD Channel announced the lineup of films for season 3 of Doc World, a series that showcases stories that dive deep into the heart of international issues, giving viewers a chance to understand the lives and concerns of people beyond U.S. borders. The first three films of the season, kicking off Sunday, September 9, entitled: Sky and Ground, Los Comandos, and Towards the North, all follow refugees fleeing their homes in search of asylum.

Me+You Productions is gearing up for their Los Angeles production of the Tony-Award winning musical Spring Awakening. The show will begin its three-week run at The Lounge Theatre in West Hollywood, California, opening on August 24th and closing September 9th. 100% of ticket proceeds from this production will benefit Everytown for Gun Safety, an American nonprofit organization whose aim is to reduce gun deaths in the wake of increased mass shootings.

The Actors' Gang Presents ANGELS, DEVILS AND OTHER THINGS, an evening of eleven original short plays written and directed by The Actors' Gang ensemble that begins previews on Thursday, May 17, has its world premiere on Saturday, May 19 and runs through Saturday, June 16, 2018.

The Artistic Home Ensemble will present the Chicago premiere of Lauren Gunderson's ADA AND THE ENGINE as the final entry in its three-play 2018-19 season, according to company Artistic Director Kathy Scambiatterra, who announced the season today. The 36-year-old Gunderson was the most-produced playwright in America during 2017, according to American Theatre Magazine.

Yellow Peril is pleased to announce 'Movies That Charmed,' a month-long film series presented by Emile Doll, founder of Queer History Cinema, featuring underrepresented visions outside mainstream portrayals of queer desire and love. The screenings will be hosted on Saturdays in April at Yellow Peril, beginning with 'Personal Best' (1982) on April 7 from 7:30 p.m. - 10 p.m. This screening series complements the current exhibit, 'Charmed,' curated by Kyle Quinn of Raw Meat Collective, which explores the sexual desire and intimacy by queer artists of color. Featured films selected for 'Movies That Charmed' include: 'Personal Best' (1986). Directed by Robert Towne and starring Mariel Hemingway and Patrice Donnelly. 'Personal Best' follows the relationship between two Olympic hopefuls who are led to choose between their increasing attraction and their goals of achieving the highest honor in their field. In English. Screening April 7. 'I Don't Want to Sleep Alone' (2006). Directed by Tsai Ming Liang and starring Lee Kang-Sheng, Norman Atun, and Cheng Shiang-chyi. Three vastly different people's stories merge into one romantic relationship in the city of Kuala Lumpur. In Taiwanese, Malay, Mandarin, and Bengali with English subtitles. Screening April 14. 'Army of Lovers or Revolt of the Perverts' (1979). Directed by Rosa Von Praunheim. Following the immediate years after Stonewall, this documentary shows the early queer-rights movement in 1970's San Francisco. In English and German with subtitles. Screening April 21. 'Fire' (1996). Directed by Deepa Mehta and starring Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das. Two women, trapped in miserable heterosexual marriages, are pulled together by love and attraction despite enormous outside pressures trying to keep them apart. In Hindi and English with English subtitles. Screening April 28. 'Desire' has a number of different meanings, with a similar root. One can desire another, while one can also desire a goal or feeling. These films all show different iterations of desire and want, from sexual desire to the desire for respect,' notes Doll, on why he selected these films. 'Each film shows characters that want something deeply, and the extent to which they will go to achieve what they want.' Doll plans to extend the reach of Queer Cinema History to a larger audience throughout the year during special events held in Rhode Island, such as PVDfest and Pride. The first screening for 'Movies That Charmed' is 'Personal Best' (1986), which will be on Saturday, April 7, from 7:30 p.m. - 10 p.m. This is Queer Cinema History's first collaboration with Yellow Peril. The Jewish Museum presents Marc Camille Chaimowicz: YOUR PLACE OR MINE..., the London-based artist's first solo museum exhibition in the United States. This large-scale survey presents Chaimowicz's work in painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, installation, furniture, lighting, ceramics, textiles, and wallpaper made between 1978 and 2018, including never before exhibited pieces and three new commissions. The exhibition is on view from March 16 through August 5, 2018.
