Nonprofit Professional Theatre in Detroit Raises $1 Million Dollars from Dollar-A-Week Pledges
by A.A. Cristi - Nov 4, 2016

The Detroit Repertory Theatre is proud to announce that the Anna Holley 'Dollar A Week Pledge' Fund has raised, since its inception, over one million dollars in pledges from the Theatre's loyal supporters.  The Pledge Fund was created in 1999 when Detroit Repertory board member Anna Holley presented the idea to the Theatre's administration that the Theatre's patrons could and would pledge one dollar a week to the Theatre. She was right. Detroit Repertory patrons have pledged every year since an average of $50,000 annually, reaching over $1,000,000 just in time for the Opening of the Repertory's 60th Anniversary season on November 3, 2016.

BWW Cabaret Conversation: Tammy Faye Starlite on Character Creation and Pushing the Boundaries of Art and Life
by Remy Block - Oct 28, 2016

Tammy Faye (nee Tammy Lang) is a luminary on the downtown NYC performance art scene. Long before I met her, I'd heard her name spoken with reverence by many artists and musicians I met when I first came to the city in 1999. Recently I saw the performer in her current show, HOLY WAR 2016: THE NEW REGIME at Pangea, in which she returns to her well-known original character Tammy Faye Starlite, a twisted conflation of Tammy Faye Bakker, Tammy Wynette, and then some. Tammy Faye Starlite brings a perverse, amoral, politically adjacent evening of song and signature improvised unhinged patter, which arises out of such an 'unacceptable' yet earnest point of view that the minds of the audience members are set free to wander in a vast desert of uncertainty, outrageousness, and catharsis of an unknown nature. It was an exhilarating and delightfully uncomfortably confounding place to be. I wanted to talk with this extraordinary performer to learn about her particular vision and creative process. Seeking to reconcile the performer Tammy Faye with the woman Tammy, I discovered a humble, down-to-earth, curious woman immersed in an ongoing critical examination of our culture---both pop and high---as well as the media and the political landscape we are mucking around in these days. Tammy also comes across as a serious, ambitious artist, pushing to present her work and be a part of the cultural conversation. We met at a cozy macaron shop in Chelsea on the day of the train crash in Hoboken. Tammy, coming from her home in Hoboken, was able to take an alternate route via bus into the city and keep our appointment, a decidedly un-diva-like move, which I found endearingly respectful. She and I spent over an hour talking about her work over the years, this shit show of an election, and the underlying question about the place of femininity and women in our culture at present.

Holiday Local Tradition AVENUE Q Returns to NCTC
by A.A. Cristi - Oct 17, 2016

This December, NCTC brings the holiday cheer with everyone's favorite foul-mouthed, feel-good musical: the return of NCTC's award-winning production of Avenue Q, with music, lyrics and original concept by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marxand book by Jeff Whitty. Proclaimed by San Francisco Travel Magazine as "a local tradition," this "year-in, year-out hilarious, high-energy, and heart-warming production" (Theatre Eddys) won over critics and audiences alike in its previous engagements in NCTC's intimate Decker Theatre. Declares the San Francisco Examiner, "only the Grinch could prevent the laughter-filled show from selling out night after night."

Saturn's Moon Press Acquires New Novel by Alayne Smith
by Christina Mancuso - May 25, 2016

Alayne Smith's novel, Ellen and the Three Predictions, has been acquired by Cactus Moon Publications. The historic fiction YA details the life of eighteen-year-old Ellen Jones and the predictions of Old Luella, a seer in the small town of Marshall, Alabama. Old Luella predicts Ellen will defend the beauty, foil a dictator, and find the soldier. When Ellen reads the predictions after her mother's unexpected death, this all seems quite far-fetched. Through the political and social changes of the early 1960s, Ellen, a budding journalist, comes to terms with her role in the world, as she encounters each of Old Luella's predictions. These encounters take her through the social taboos of Callendar Plantation, Alabama, to the promise of love and a career in Miami, and finally, to a daring rescue in Castro's Cuba. The novel also contains a special insert, 'Ellen's Notebook.' The notebook reflects Ellen's journalism education at the George W. Newman College of Journalism at the University of Columbus in Miami. A former advisor to CNN, Alayne Smith grew up in Alabama, lived in Denver and Tripoli, Libya, and settled in Atlanta, Georgia in 1969. She received masters and education specialist degrees in Instructional Technology at the University of Georgia. She served as a media specialist in Gwinnett County, Georgia for eleven years. In 1989, she moved to the high school level, initiating a high school program of broadcast journalism and video production where advanced students produced a monthly video magazine. With great honor, two of her top students were awarded an Emmy in 1999. For more about Ellen and the Three Predictions, visit the author's web site at www.alaynesmith.com.
