by Don Grigware - Oct 28, 2014

On Sunday October 26, Clifford Bell presented the first Rick Starr Scholarship Fund Benefit Concert, entitled Starr Bucks, at Upstairs at Vitello's in Studio City. The beloved Starr, who passed away about a year ago, worked at Hollywood Sheet Music and served the Los Angeles musical theatre community in a most unusual, endearing way. Not only did he assist singers over the years to find unpublished songs for their various club acts and cabaret performances, but would go out of his way to find material for them depending on their individual preferences...and would call each and every customer on his or her birthday every year, just to wish them a Happy Birthday. A rare and delightful human being! Starr was remembered fondly with anecdotes by the three cabaret stars of the evening Mary Jo Mundy, Todd Murray and Shawn Ryan. Affable virtuoso pianist/singer Michael Sobie served as accompanist/musical director throughout the 90 minute set. (more...)

BWW Reviews: The Guthrie Theater and Lyric Arts Present Two Different Versions of the Heartwarming A CHRISTMAS CAROL
by Jill Schafer - Nov 23, 2014

Charles Dickens' novella A CHRISTMAS CAROL has become a staple of holiday traditions. It shouldn't be surprising, then, that this classic story can currently be seen on multiple stages in the Twin Cities. The biggest of these is the Guthrie Theater; this is the 40th year that the Guthrie has produced A CHRISTMAS CAROL. I think it's safe to say this is one of their most popular shows every year, with many families incorporating it into their annual traditions. Lyric Arts is also producing the show on their Main Street Stage in Anoka. I was lucky enough to see these two different interpretations of this classic story on back-to-back nights. And while I do have a clear favorite between the two, it's really unfair to compare them too closely. Both are entertaining and creative interpretations of Charles Dickens' heartwarming story about the rich-in-money poor-in-friends businessman who learns through the visitation of four ghosts that it's better to be kind than rich. (more...)

I'm talking about the moment when someone gets into a relationship and then they start valuing the relationship of their significant other over the opinions of their best friend. And who is officially guilty of doing just that? Andrew. And who doesn't like it in the least bit? Stu. Let's the games begin… (more...)

BWW Recap: Turkey on Turkey on Turkey on a MODERN FAMILY Thanksgiving
by Matt Smith - Nov 20, 2014

It's the MODFAM Thanksgiving episode, and, as expected, there's a whole lot of turkeys present this week (three to be exact). Luckily, this episode wasn't one of them. :-) As I said on Halloween, generally, holiday episodes that continuously repeat holidays well into their run (like, six seasons in) may grow stale, as the holiday doesn't change and in a show's sixth season, creators may find less original storylines that haven't already been used up, say, last Thanksgiving. But, not the case with MODERN FAMILY, who, in their — give or take — sixth seasonal outing, gives us an original — and hilarious — storyline, that, again, was anything but a turkey. The episode provided a nice balance of Thanksgiving-centered stories and mixed them in with stories that didn't have to do with the holiday, but still seamlessly bled into those storylines — that's why the writing on this show is sooooo genius! (Okay… anyone have a count on how many times I've said that?!) (more...)

BWW Reviews: Soprano Sonya Yoncheva Brings Voluptuous Sound to Debut in Stellar Ensemble of Met BOHEME
by Richard Sasanow - Dec 5, 2014

Puccini's LA BOHEME has that magical ability to change its shape depending on the cast. When Pavarotti sang, it became his opera, with a Mimi hard pressed to take the spotlight, even in her death scene. When Stratas, Carreras and Scotto (as Musetta) led the cast, it became a glittery ensemble of shooting stars. At this week's performance with rising star Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva as Mimi, there was no doubt that she was the evening's “it” girl, even though the other principal singers added mightily to the performance's success. BWW Recap: SURVIVOR- BLOOD VS WATER 12/3; Full Results!
by Kara McCoy - Dec 3, 2014

Brace yourselves, fellow reality TV junkies. Tonight's SURVIVOR is supersized, with two episodes airing back to back. That's double the challenges, double the backstabbing, and double the ridiculous hashtags. Double. The. Drama. Really. 'Tensions are running high' and 'patience is running low' in Huyopaville, which I guess is to be expected at this point of the game. With just eight contestants left on the island, the stakes are only getting higher, and the million dollars is only getting closer. It's time to be a little cutthroat. A little conniving. Plus being stuck with the same people week after week probably just gets annoying. It's only natural. Whatever it is, it makes for better TV--am I right?! (*Waits patiently for a high-five.*) (more...)
