Juilliard Receives $10 Million to Endow Masters Program in Drama

The Juilliard School today announced a $10 million gift that completes the endowment of the School's new four-year masters-level graduate program in Drama. The gift supports increased instructional costs and new faculty, and provides full scholarships plus stipends for actors in their final and fourth year of the master of fine arts program in Drama. Juilliard's Board Chairman and his wife, Bruce and Suzie Kovner initiated a matching challenge grant of up to $5 million to endow Juilliard Drama's MFA program, with donors John A. and Carole Moran and The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust completing that challenge.

New Line Theatre, 'the bad boy of musical theatre,' has secured the rights for the regional premiere of the taut musical thriller NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD to open its 23rd season, running Oct. 10-Nov. 2, 2013, and closing on Halloween weekend. The rest of New Line's 2013-2014 season will be announced later this year.

Composer Bill Ryan is known to many as The Force behind The Grand Valley State University New Music Ensemble, the student group that gained widespread praise for recordings of Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians (2007) and Terry Riley's In C with remixes (2009). With Towards Daybreak, the sophomore release from Ryan's ensemble Billband, the focus returns to his own work. Towards Daybreak came out Tuesday, January 29 on Innova. The music - by turns contemplative, roiling, elegaic, and aggressive - reflects experiences in Ryan's life, from the birth of a child to the loss of his parents.

The first preview performances of Philadelphia Theatre Company's production of The Mountaintop by Katori Hall will take place on Saturday, January 19 at 8:00 PM (Broad and Lombard Streets) and on Sunday, January 20 at 3:00 PM at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre. The remainder of the performance schedule remains unchanged through Sunday, February 17.

Alliance Theatre Receives Grant from Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

Designed to advance the role of playwrights in American theatre, the goals of the residencies include providing playwrights with space, time and resources; and positively influencing the working environment of theatres by embedding playwrights on their staffs.
