Opera Singer Brian Asawa Dies at Age 49

Opera singer, Brian Asawa has died following a long illness on April 18, 2016, at the age of 49.  He was a Japanese-American countertenor. 'In his prime', according to Opera News, 'Asawa was an electric performer, his fearless performing style supported by a voice of arresting beauty and expressivity'.

Set to a nearly forgotten Romantic gem, "Valse Triste" by Hungarian violinist and composer Ferenc von Vecsey, the video was directed by Tim Whalen, choreographed by Caitlin Meighan, written by Philippe Quint and co-produced by Big Foot Media andPhilippe Quint.

San Francisco Opera Announces 2016-17 Season

San Francisco Opera General Director David Gockley and Music Director Nicola Luisotti today announced the Company's 2016–17 Season repertory and roster of international guest artists, conductors and creative teams scheduled to appear at the War Memorial Opera House, as well as initial programming for SF Opera Lab 2017 presentations at the Diane B. Wilsey Center for Opera's Taube Atrium Theater. The Company's 94th Season will also mark Matthew Shilvock's inaugural year as San Francisco Opera's new general director, succeeding his mentor and internationally respected impresario, David Gockley, who will step down on July 31, 2016.

Carlo Rizzi Returns to the Lyric Opera of Chicago in Verdi's NABUCCO

Carlo Rizzi is ready to enter an exciting period of work in the New Year. The conductor's 2015/16 season continues in January with a return to the Lyric Opera of Chicago for Matthew Ozawa's new production of Verdi's Nabucco. He heads to Milan the following month to begin rehearsals for Teatro alla Scala's eagerly awaited staging of Umberto Giordano's La cena delle beffe, an opera not seen at La Scala for eight decades. Rizzi's rich schedule also includes the world premiere of Iain Bell's In Parenthesis and the double-bill of Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci, staged to celebrate the 70th birthday of Welsh National Opera (WNO).

ECCE Ensemble Performs Earle Brown's DECEMBER 1952 Tonight

Cambridge, MA (FOR RELEASE 11.18.15) – As the contemporary music ensemble-in- residence at Cambridge's Le Laboratoire, ECCE presents a one-night only performance of Earle Brown's December 1952, in conjunction with the gallery's current exhibit, BIRDLY by Max Rheiner. Featuring dispersed acoustic performances by ECCE (violinist Karen Kim, bass clarinetist Vasko Dukovski, tubaist Ben Stapp, bassoonist Sarah Schoenbeck) interspersed with recorded polyphony by sound designer Ricardo Romaneiro, this spatial rendering of December 1952 is an aural analog to BIRDLY's virtual reality experience.
