Plans are underway for the Orpheum Theatre's 85th Anniversary this fall, and citizens of the Mid-South are being called upon to share Orpheum memorabilia, pictures, and personal stories for an exhibition celebrating the Theatre's history and contribution to the local community since it was built in 1928. Memorabilia items may be loaned or sold to the theatre.
The Orpheum continues its exciting Fall film mini-series with KING KONG on Friday, September 6 at 7:00 PM. Handpicked by Orpheum President and CEO Pat Halloran, this 1933 version of the film will cost patrons only 50 cents per person as homage to the low ticket prices of that time period.
The Philip K. Dick Science Fiction Film Festival's inaugural event went off without the occurrence of a broken timeline and became one of this past weekend's hottest gatherings. About 1,000 fans attended the IndieScreen theater with a sold out opening night for Radio Free Albemuth and five other previously announced locations to view 10 features and 50 shorts which carry on the concepts and style of the festival's legendary namesake. I'm reminded of the old joke: It's only funny till someone gets hurt; then it's hilarious. Jacobean audiences liked the stage littered with corpses at the end; we settle for one or two corpses and people's lives shattered. And that this show certainly delivers. There may not be much depth to it, much in the way of a philosophical point, but it's absorbing to see.
