Taconic Stage's THE REAL (DESPERATE) HOUSEWIVES OF COLUMBIA COUNTY MUSICAL to Play the Laurie Beechman, 3/7-28
by BWW News Desk - Jan 31, 2013

'The Real (Desperate) Housewives of Columbia County Musical' by Carl Ritchie (book, lyrics, director) and Wayne Moore (music) is a Coward-esque evening from the Taconic Stage Company upstate, which it took by storm in the summer of 2011. Thinly guised as the confessions of four 40-something women on reality TV, this four-character musical spotlights the culture-clash between spoiled, egocentric 'weekender' women and their working class 'townie' counterparts in a rural upstate community. The show has no reason but to delight, which it does with savvy performances, high-heeled lyrics and the poison of its cocktail-party chit-chat dialogue. To share it with a wider audience, Taconic Stage Company will present the piece in its NYC debut March 7 to 28 at the Laurie Beechman Theatre, 407 West 42nd Street.

BWW Reviews: ROY COHN Given a Fresh Look at Odyssey
by Don Grigware - Jan 24, 2012

Playwright Joan Beber's concept of Roy Cohn in her intriguingly nightmarish Hunger: In Bed with Roy Cohn, now onstage at the Odyssey Theatre, comes off a self-indulgent, spoiled, gluttonous, untrusting child monster, which certainly does not add up to a positive view of his humanity. In Angels in America, as I was too young to know the real Cohn in the McCarthy era, I saw Al Pacino's hard-edged, evil-to-the-core interpretation of the man. Barry Pearl's in Hunger, yes is more childlike, whimpering, whining, but if Beber truly wants us to witness a good side to bad, she has not succeeded. I despise the lying, bigoted, hateful man just as much as I did before, reality or fantasy. On the positive side, director Jules Aaron has ingeniously staged the over-the-top entertainment with a marvelous cast. Hunger will run through March 11.

BWW Reviews: Curious Theatre's ON AN AVERAGE DAY - A Compelling Watch
by Michael Mulhern - Jul 11, 2011

ON AN AVERAGE DAY by playwright John Kolvenbach is a bizarre story, but made for several funny (loved the fridge bit) and profoundly affecting (mania and depression) moments. At times I wondered if I was in a dirty kitchen or an insane asylum. When they warn of gunshots before entering the theater, you know you are in for an interesting time! On the surface, the story appears to be about two brothers, Jack and Bobby, drinking beers and catching up on life after years apart. The actual story, however, runs deeper, bringing to the fore issues of parental abandonment, self-isolation, guilt and blame.
