Racists, Recessions & Revolutions is a new play that explores the historic gold rush of fake news unleashed on the world in 2016 by a group of teens in a small Macedonian town, and how its consequences are still felt today. At the centre of the story is Nadica, a young woman who is drawn into the lucrative hustle of fake news at its inception, building an online empire by exploiting political division before bringing her expertise back to Britain. The show is directed and co-created by Harry Conway and performed and co-created by Isabella Heaver, who is herself half Macedonian and half British, drawing on her own experiences and heritage to bring a deeply personal perspective to the story. The production delves into the muddy world of online hate, mass campaigns designed to stoke fear, and the consequences of an internet culture where the pursuit of clicks has become more valuable than truth.
