The Globe's award-winning small-scale touring programme will tour for the first time to the Theatre Royal Glasgow from Tuesday 4 until Saturday 8 August with a brand new production of Romeo & Juliet. It will be the last touring show at Shakespeare's Globe which will be directed by Artists Director Dominic Dromgoole, supported by the young director Tim Hoare. Romeo & Juliet is a fresh and new exploration of Shakespeare's greatest love story. The play opened at the Clwyd Theatr Cymru and will continue to tour around the UK and Europe before making its journey across the pond to the US.

A violent street brawl between their rival families is the prelude to Romeo's first encounter with Juliet. Despite this, and the fact Juliet has been promised to another, they fall in love. But any plans for their future happiness are cruelly destroyed by renewed violence between their families and tragedy begins to unfold.

A small troupe of travelling players take to the road with Shakespeare's classic tale of star-crossed lovers. Performed at the Globe and on an Elizabethan-style stage, this stripped-down version breathes new life into one of the greatest of all love stories.

Dominic Dromgoole is completing his Artistic Directorship in April 2016 after 10 successful years of running Shakespeare's Globe. In his time he has directed over fifteen productions and it was under his leadership that the Globe's original touring model was revisited.

Using an Elizabethan style booth stage - inspired by paintings and etchings from Shakespeare's time, when touring was prevalent - eight actors will visit beautiful and inspiring settings across the UK, Europe and the US with this scaled-down production. The actors will be doubling up roles in this fast paced adaptation and will be breaking the boundaries between the stage and the audience.
