Photo Flash: Rehearsals Begin at Studio Wayne McGregor, Matthew Hawkins and Red Note Ensemble's VESALII ICONES

Thanks to support from Edinburgh City Council and Studio Wayne McGregor, dancer and choreographer Matthew Hawkins will be working with Red Note Ensemble 'cellist and Co-Artistic Director, Robert Irvine, on a new version of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies' Vesalii Icones, to be premiered in 2018.

The collaboration between Red Note Ensemble and Matthew Hawkins is one of 14 arts projects to be awarded funding thanks to a new culture fund launched by the City of Edinburgh Council. Designed to support Capital-based collaboration in the arts, The Culture Project Fund awarded groups working across a range of art forms, from circus and dance to theatre, digital arts, film and new writing.

Red Note Ensemble is Scotland's contemporary music ensemble. They develop, perform, present and find new audiences for new music within Scotland, the UK and internationally. Founded in 2008 the ensemble performs the established classics of contemporary music, commissions new music, develops the work of new and emerging composers and artists from around the world, and finds new spaces and new ways of performing and presenting contemporary music to attract new audiences.

Matthew moved to Edinburgh in 2011 and showed his first choreographies at informal events in the Dance Base studio in the city. Recognition for Matthew has come in the form of a Jerwood Choreography prize, a Dance Artists Fellowship from Arts Council England, a Herald Angel award and Professional Development/Choreographic Futures support from Creative Scotland.

The first exploration into this new work takes place at Studio Wayne McGregor in London on 13 July 2017.
