EDINBURGH 2018: Review: SKIN A CAT, Assembly
Skin A Cat is a play based on playwright Isley Lynn's real-life experience of vaginismus.
With unflinching honesty, we see Alana's experience of the condition, unable to use tampons or have what she considers 'normal' sex. Lydia Larson gives a wonderful, raw performance as Alana and works well with both the more sensitive content and the humour in the piece.
As Alana screams out in agony trying to force something that she thinks she should be able to do the piece becomes painful to witness. Alana is dressed in nude clothing, giving the impression of exposure and vulnerability. While at times the piece seems very explicit, it is also artfully performed.
Skin A Cat achieves a lot in just ninety minutes. The narrative comes full circle and offers a message of hope and acceptance. The play is never gratuitous and remains touching and entertaining throughout.
Important, educational and at times excruciating, Skin A Cat is an essential watch.
