EDINBURGH 2018: Review: GINGZILLA: GLAMONSTER VS THE WORLD, Assembly

EDINBURGH 2018: Review: GINGZILLA: GLAMONSTER VS THE WORLD, Assembly Opening with "She's Not There" Gingzilla has an incredible voice an standing at an impressive 7 feet tall, she certainly has stage presence!

Glamonster Vs The World is a show of two halves. In the first, Gingzilla is learning how to be an old-fashioned housewive in order to please her man. There is a short intermission with snacks being force fed to men pulled up on stage. Although audience participation is not optional it is done in good spirits and without humiliation.

The second half of the show is the evolution of Gingzilla. Starting off in a very glamorous swing dress and headscarf the show makes some interesting comments about the roles of women and the contrast between the glamour and the monster. Short video clips are shown from 50's style horror drive-in movies where the monster, such as King Kong, is defeated- with Gingzilla superimposed into all of the footage.

Gingzilla herself is an extraordinary talent and belts out huge anthems making it look effortless. The likes of Beyonce and The White Stripes are covered with a mix of lip syncing and superb vocals. Glamonster Vs The World is a well-executed show and definitely one of the top cabaret/drag acts at the festival.
