Tell us a bit about It Shoulda Been You

With a blushing bride, a nervous groom and their overbearing mothers, It Shoulda Been You is a wild musical comedy where anything that can go wrong, does! Expect plenty of crazy twists and turns, uninvited guests and love popping up in mysterious places.

Originally produced on Broadway in 2015 starring Tyne Daley and Harriet Harris, It Shoulda Been You is making its Edinburgh Fringe debut as one of the first productions outwith the United States of America. Neil Lavin, Director of the five star European Premiere of Heathers: The Musical (Dundee Opsoc, 2016), is collaborating for the first time with Musical Director Steven Segaud, (credits including EUSOG's 2015 Edinburgh Fringe production, Little Shop of Horrors) and Choreographer Nel Springrose (G&T Productions). Joined by an ensemble cast of talented singers and actors from all over Scotland, this production will enjoy a limited run at theSpace: Venue 45.

Why bring it to Edinburgh?

We are an Edinburgh based theatre company and we actually created Room 29 Theatre with only one intention: to take a show to the Fringe. Neil and myself, the co-founders of this theatre group have taken part in the festival for many years as performers. We wanted to open our own show in the fringe and we chose It Shoulda Been You which is yet to be done outside the US.

What sets it apart from other shows at the Fringe?

It Shoulda Been You is a perfect show to see this Fringe - along side a story that will keep audiences laughing long after the curtain closes, the show also has a huge amount of heart , taking a look at family, the choices we make, and most of all, the way we love.

Who would you recommend comes to see you?

Anyone who has been to a wedding or might even be getting married will absolutely love this production. It is easily relatable and everyone knows how much of a struggle it is to put on a wedding but also how funny it can be. This is also the perfect show for musical lovers. This will be one of the first times this production is done outside the US and musical enthusiasts will not want to miss it.

Are there any other shows you're hoping to catch at the festival?

As a group we are hoping to catch the following other musicals in the fringe as Room 29 Theatre are closely connected to these groups:

  • Captivate Theatre - Annie, Sweeney Todd, Les Miserables, Oliver, Smashing Shakespeare
  • EUSOG - Company The Musical
  • Footlights - Sister Act
  • Car Crash Production - American Idiot & Priscilla Queen of the Desert
  • Beyond Broadway Productions - The Great American Trailer Park

Personally I am very interested in seeing:

  • Everything above
  • Shotgun Theatre - Godspell
  • Cambridge Uni Musical Theatre Society - SiX
  • Royal Conservatoire of Scotland - Atlantic: A Scottish Story
  • Showstopper! The Improvised Musical
  • Aria Entertainment - The Toxic Avenger
