Spamalot is the hit musical which claims to be "lovingly ripped off" from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Borrowing jokes from many Monty Python sketches it is wonderfully silly and well written.

King Arthur has been given the throne under somewhat dubious conditions. The Lady Of The Lake presented him with excalibur and has deemed him fit to rule England. King Arthur has been sent on a quest to find the holy grail and chaos ensues in the form of killer rabbits, severed limbs and, er, shrubbery.

The songs are entertaining and undoubtedly hilarious but not the sort of thing I would be looking to listen to much after the show. The sing along number is of course Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life but none of the others tend to stick in my mind after leaving the theatre.

I have seen Spamalot before but I really loved the casting this time around. Sarah Earnshaw is a superb Lady Of The Lake who plays the part perfectly. The casting highlight is Joe Pasquale as King Arthur and Joe Tracini as his sidekick Patsy. As real life father and son the pair work well together and make for a wonderful double act.

Spamalot has a fairly short running time but this prevents it from overstaying its welcome. The plot may be a little thin on the ground but an excellent script makes this a very worthwhile way to spend an evening!

Catch Spamalot on tour throughout June.
