BWW Reviews: Woodlawn Theatre's YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is a Monstrous Good Time
by Jeff Davis - October 21, 2013
It's alive! Woodlawn Theatre's current production of Young Frankenstein, the Mel Brooks musical based on his hit 1974 film, is enjoyable and entertaining, perhaps more than it should be considering the mediocre material. But despite the few flaws in the material, this is one monster of a good time.

BWW Reviews: The Playhouse's LES MISERABLES Is A Dark, Personal Must-See
by Jeff Davis - October 19, 2013
It's strange to think that Les Miserables, the worldwide musical sensation by Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alan Boublil, is just now being licensed to regional theaters. Demand for Les Miserables has grown within the regional theatre world in the 27 years since the show premiered, and that demand is definitely why The Playhouse in San Antonio and Zach Theatre in nearby Austin feel they can both present the show at the same time. So if you're in Central Texas, which production do you see? My answer: see both if you can, but if that's not an option, then I have the following suggestion. If you want to see a grand, epic, romantically designed production with a few strong performances, catch the version in Austin, but if you prefer a more modestly designed production that creates a darker, more emotional world in which every performance is spectacular, go to The Playhouse in San Antonio.

BWW Reviews: JEKYLL AND HYDE is Devilishly Fun
by Jeff Davis - September 17, 2013
It must be Halloween season again. Haunted houses are springing up everywhere, costume shops are hijacking vacant storefronts, and Jekyll and Hyde is scaring up cheers and applause at San Antonio's Cameo Theatre. The production and its three leads easily overcome any missteps of the material.
BWW Interviews: Adam Levinskas from BOOK OF MORMON on Tour
by Kathy Strain - September 15, 2013
I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. My sisters took dance classes several nights a week, so it was easier for my Mom to just bring me along. I think I was about six when I started taking class. One weekend a bunch of the moms were taking their daughters to audition for The St. Louis MUNY and I tagged along. I marched in place and belted out 'You're a Grand Old Flag' at the top of my lungs and, to my delight and surprise, ended up being cast in the children's ensemble of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. I became addicted to performing almost instantaneously. I went on to do shows at The MUNY and other local theaters for many years to come.

BWW Reviews: Strong Direction and Performances Can't Save Problematic Text in BETHLEHEM
by Jeff Davis - September 02, 2013
Octavio Solis is a prolific Latin American playwright with over 20 plays and numerous awards to his credit, or so I'm told. His drama Bethlehem, now playing in San Antonio, won the 2002 Latino Playwriting Award, but after seeing the show (my first introduction to Solis's work), I'm not exactly sure why. His text is the glaring weak link of the production. While the cast is fantastic, the text is a jumbled, long, and puzzling mess that seems more concerned with creating an 'ew' factor than an entertainment factor.
Classic Theatre to Present THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, 11/8-24
by BWW News Desk - August 26, 2013
Two sisters that could not be more different: sweet, modest Bianca, and outspoken, rude Katarina. Bianca cannot marry until her older sister does, so her suitors hatch a plan to set Kate up with the rip-roarious and crass Petruchio who takes it as a challenge to tame and wed this shrewish woman, the prize being her dowry. Meanwhile Bianca deals with her own over-eager suitors and falls in love with Lucentio, a tutor in disguise. Shakespeare weaves a tale full of witty banter, mixed up identities, and couples in love and in loathing. The Taming of the Shrew is one of the most popular of all Shakespeare's comedies and the source for the popular musical Kiss Me Kate.
