Daydream Theatre Company Presents Powerful New Play: “The State of Florida Versus Mike Diana”

Providence, RI – September 23,2025 – Daydream Theatre Company is proud to announce its fall 2025 production, The State of Florida Versus Mike Diana, a new play written and directed by Lenny Schwartz. Based on a true story, the play explores the fascinating case of Mike Diana — the only artist in U.S. history to be criminally convicted of obscenity for his artwork.

What is the line between art and obscenity?

The play invites audiences to meet a 20-year-old Mike Diana, a young artist who self-published a comic book with a circulation of just 300 copies — only to find himself the target of a legal battle that would make history. While living in Florida, Diana was charged, convicted, and jailed for obscenity. Police raided his home, confiscated his art supplies, and restricted him from drawing.

The State of Florida Versus Mike Diana dramatizes these events, highlighting Diana’s fight for freedom of expression while exploring humor, resilience, and the search for grace when the world seems determined to silence you.

“This is a story about courage and creativity,” says playwright and director Lenny Schwartz. “It asks audiences to think deeply about the power of art, censorship, and how we define obscenity in a free society, especially during our current political climate."
