The Governing Board and staff of the McLean Community Center wish you a Happy Valentine's Day! This year, instead of giving the usual gift of candy or flowers, consider giving a performance, trip or class.

Free Forums
New this year to the Alden Theatre is "Insider Knowledge," an intimate opportunity for patrons to engage with expert speakers who will address issues of arts, culture and society and respond to questions. These forums are free and open to the public and will be held in MCC's Stedman room.

Tonight!
Martha Graham, the Pioneer

Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 8 p.m.
Learn about dancer and choreographer Martha Graham and her impact on American art from George Mason University dance professor Dan Joyce and choreographers Christopher Morgan and Dana McLeod. Whether you're a modern dance aficionado or novice, you'll come away with new insights into Graham's contributions.

Islam in Pop Culture: Stereotypes, Stigma and Shtick
Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 8 p.m.
The media helps define how we see each other, and ourselves. Explore mass media and pop culture (in both the Western and Arab worlds) and how Muslims are portrayed worldwide. Panelists will include Georgetown University Professors of Islamic Studies Dr. Laurie King-Irani and Dr. Adel Iskandar.

I'm Your Puppet
The Alden Theatre's Puppetry Festival is this Saturday, Feb. 12. Your children, ages 4-8 can discover the wonderful world of puppets. The festival includes two puppet shows and fun craft activities. Hours are 1:30-4 p.m. Tickets are $12, $10 for district residents.

At 1:30 p.m., Grey Seal Puppets performs Tangle of Tales. See a variety of puppet styles in action as the group presents The Frog Prince from Germany, Three Billy Goats Gruff from Scandinavia and The Three Little Pigs from England. Barefoot Puppets, of Richmond, Va. performs Trickster Tales at 2:15 p.m. Can a spider defeat an elephant at tug-of-war? Overpower a python? Capture a cloud of hornets? All things are possible with the world-famous trickster Anansi the Spider. Following the two performances, children can make puppets Trickster Talesat creation stations.

Start Valentine's Early
MCC's Sunday Soiree Dance is the perfect way for you to start Valentine's Day early. The next dance is from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb 13. Admission is $5 at the door. Ball gown not required!

The theme of this month's soiree is "My Funny Valentine" and it features live music by The Wayne Tympanick Trio. Refreshments will be served.

Sensational Camps
Registration begins on Tuesday, Feb. 15, for MCC's sensational summer camps for children.

Camp McLean provides a wide array of fun and challenging activities for your young ones. Children ages 3-10 will swim, enjoy trips and performances, explore nature, and much more.

Other MCC-sponsored camps include: Summer Theatre Workshops, Camp Shakespeare (in collaboration with the Shakespeare Theatre Company of Washington, DC), McLean Project for the Arts' Summer Art Camp, Camp Abrakadoodle, Summer Fun Specialty Weeks (culinary arts, Funfit, fencing, soccer and science) and the Old Firehouse Teen Center Summer Camp.

Young cooks will prepare a full-course meal as Chef John Bauhs helps them explore the foundations of meal planning and kitchen safety. Each child will have an opportunity to be involved with hands-on meal preparation. After preparing their meals, Chef John will teach the students elements involved in social interacting and dining, such as etiquette, poise, posture and manners.

Meeting of the Minds

The next meeting of the McLean Community Center Governing Board will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 6:30 p.m. There will be a joint meeting with the McLean Project for the Arts, followed by the regular meeting at 7:30 p.m.
