In this “little gem of international theatre,” (Winnipeg Free Press) griots, or West African storytellers, share the tale of a water-stealing sun and an ancient baobab tree that produces an unexpected gift: a baby who is heralded to save the region from prolonged drought. Featuring traditional music from Mali and Senegal, puppets large and small, one naughty monkey and a witch with an itch to dance,Baobabis a percussion-filled fable about a young boy’s heroic quest to save his village. Making its Philadelphia debut, Théâtre Motus’ “Baobab is the next best thing to The Lion King, only smaller-scale and far better tailored (at 55 minutes) to young attention spans.” (Montreal Gazette)
Baobab is a coproduction of Théâtre Motus and the SÔ Company (Mali), created with the support of Théâtre de la Ville (Longueuil) for a residency, and in collaboration with Hamadoun Kassogué (Mali) and †Ismaïla Manga (Senegal).
