Today in 1903, The Wizard of Oz opened at the Majestic Theatre, where it ran for 293 performances. Based on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, which was originally published in 1900, much of the original music was by Paul Tietjens and has been mostly forgotten, although it was still well-remembered and in discussion at MGM in the late 1930s, when the classic film version of the story was made. The main plot of the show, as recounted in newspapers of the time, is Pastoria's attempts to regain the throne from the Wizard of Oz. The original protagonists' search for the Wizard puts them on the wrong side of the law. Since then, many new incarnations have been created, including the 1939 film, and the 2011 West End musical.

LEGENDS OF OZ: DOROTHY'S RETURN from Summertime Entertainment and Clarius Entertainment hits theaters on May 9, 2014. The film features the voice talents of Lea Michele (Dorothy), Jim Belushi (Lion), Dan Aykroyd (Scarecrow), Kelsey Grammer (Tin Man) and Bernadette Peters (Glinda), each giving new life to familiar Oz characters. It's time for a return to Oz as Moonlight Stage Productions' 33rd summer season, the first planned by new Artistic Director Steven Glaudini, continues with the family classic THE WIZARD OF OZ, now playing through August 10. THE WIZARD OF OZ is presented by Moonlight for the first time as an adult production, with adult actors in the leading roles of the Royal Shakespeare Company version. Kicking off the celebration, The Wizard of Oz 3D will be presented in the immersive Imax 3D format and return to the big screen for an exclusive one-week engagement in Imax theatres across North America beginning September 20, 2013. Today 1985, the first Broadway revival of The Wiz opened at the Lunt-Fontanne THeatre, where it ran for 13 performances. The Wiz is a musical with music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls and book by William F. Brown. It is a retelling of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the context of African American culture. It opened on October 21, 1974 at the Morris A. Mechanic Theatre in Baltimore, Maryland and moved to the Majestic Theatre. The 1975 Broadway production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
