Now in its 13th season, the Kimmel Center continues its longstanding commitment of bringing jazz legends to Philadelphia who are changing the shape of jazz across the nation, and inspire a legion of local jazz artists to explore the art form with live concert experiences across its campus.

When composer/arranger/pianist Billy Childs was introduced to the music of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer-songwriter Laura Nyro at the age of 11, he was left with a powerful and lasting impression of Nyro's unique blend of Broadway-inspired melodies, jazz improvisations and socially conscious lyrics. Childs returned to that early experience for his latest project, creating and orchestrating his newest album, Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro. Orange County jazz fans will have the opportunity to hear Childs' loving homage to the late great Nyro at Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Friday, October 17 at 8 p.m. in the Rene?e and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.

The Scottsdale Cultural Council has appointed Neale Perl as its new president and CEO. A senior executive with more than 25 years of experience in arts administration and presenting, Perl is the president emeritus of D.C.-based Washington Performing Arts, where he served as president and CEO from 2002 to 2013. He will begin his new position on Aug. 11, succeeding Scottsdale Cultural Council Interim President and CEO Richard Hayslip, who will continue to serve the organization as a member of its board of trustees.
There's a torch being passed at the long running, and well-loved radio program Jazz After Hours, created by Jim Wilke 30 years ago in Seattle. The man picking up the torch this fall is Jeff Hanley, also a well-known name in the Seattle, Bay Area, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara radio markets. Jazz After Hours airs twice weekly on more than 60 Public Radio International station.
