BWW Reviews: JIMMY WEBB at the Kranzberg Arts Center
by Chris Gibson
- Mar 20, 2011
St. Louis has experienced a veritable confluence of exceptional songwriting talent with concerts by Randy Newman (The Sheldon), Kris Kristofferson and Merle Haggard (The Fox), along with the recent three day stand at the Kranzberg by Jimmy Webb. While I certainly regret missing the show at the Fox, I did catch Newman's evening at the Sheldon, and I also managed to attend the opening night performance of Jimmy Webb (March 17, 2011), who promoting his latest release, Just Across the River, as well. I'm happy to report that I enjoyed the show, and was particularly entertained by his reminiscences on a golden era of songwriting.

It is widely recognized that multi-Grammy-Award winner Jimmy Webb is one of our best and most acclaimed songwriters. (Just last month he was elected Chairman of the Songwriters Hall of Fame.) It is less well known that he is a first rate performer, and what a treat to see him in this intimate venue. With great songs, and great stories about his friends who recorded them, Jimmy fully connects in what is a terrific show. After a month-long tour of Ireland and the UK, he'll be here on St. Patrick's Day and weekend. He'll be telling some Ireland stories -- there's a very funny one about traveling around rural Ireland, lost, with Richard Harris.

Willie Nelson Plays The Cotillion, 3/10
by BWW News Desk
- Mar 10, 2011
While it's common now for mature pop artists to attempt to put their own stamp on the American Songbook, Nelson practically invented the approach. As a Nashville artist in the '60s, Nelson himself penned more than a few tunes that have arguably become American classics themselves, including 'Crazy,' 'Night Life' and the sublime 'Funny How Time Slips Away.'
