On Monday, Dec. 15, 2014 from 1 to 3 p.m., costumed dancers from Houston Ballet's production of The Nutcrackerwill make a special visit to Texas Children's and Hematology Centers. This holiday season Houston Ballet will present 35 performances of The Nutcracker at the Wortham Theater Center Nov. 28 - Dec. 28, and the dancers want to bring the magic of the performance to children who may not have the opportunity to see the production. On Dec. 15, 2014, Houston Ballet demi soloist Elise Elliott, corps de ballet dancers Rhodes Elliott, Jacquelyn Long, Katelyn May, Aaron Sharratt, and apprentice Mallory Mehaffey will participate in this event.

From the home city of manned spaceflight, the Houston Symphony announced today that it has released The Earth-An HD Odyssey on DVD and Blu-ray. The Earth-An HD Odyssey is the highly anticipated second installment of the Symphony's groundbreaking HD Odyssey film trilogy and Music Director Andres Orozco-Estrada's first recording release with the Houston Symphony. This DVD/Blu-ray release follows the world premiere live performance of The Earth-An HD Odyssey in February of 2012 at Jones Hall.

The Houston Symphony Receives $20K NEA Grant

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman Jane Chu announced this week that the Houston Symphony is one of 919 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. The Houston Symphony is recommended for a $20,000 grant to support the organization's "Musically Speaking with Andres" series.
The Houston Ballet Presents JUBILEE OF DANCE Tonight

Houston Ballet presents its eleventh annual Jubilee of Dance, a special one-night only performance tonight, December 5, 2014 at 7:00 pm. This year's program will feature the great American ballerina Julie Kent, a principal dancer with New York's American Ballet Theatre, who will make a special guest appearance. Ms. Kent will perform the leading female role in Stanton Welch's Clear (2001), a role she created at the work's premiere in 2001 in New York. Houston Ballet will also pay tribute to beloved first soloist Kelly Myernick, who is retiring after 14 years with the company. The Jubilee of Dance will close the evening with an excerpt of Stanton Welch's high-speed Velocity (2003), a ballet that pays homage to classical conventions in a contemporary manner. American tenor Jay Hunter Morris will replace Anthony Dean Griffey in Houston Grand Opera's world premiere production of A Christmas Carol, it was announced today by HGO Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers. Mr. Griffey has withdrawn for health reasons. The 90-minute opera, commissioned by HGO from composer Iain Bell and librettist Simon Callow, is written for a single singer performing the role of The Narrator. A Christmas Carol runs from tonight, December 5 through 21, 2014, at the Wortham Theater Center, and is suitable for ages 12 and up.
Houston Symphony Orchestra & Filarmónica Joven de Colombia Team Up to Provide Training to Young Musicians

HOUSTON (December 2, 2014) – Today, the Houston Symphony announced a partnership with the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia (FJC) that will send fourteen Houston Symphony musicians to Colombia in June 2015 to mentor young musicians. Following this mentorship opportunity in Colombia, the Houston Symphony will host the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia in Houston for a 10-day residency that will include two side-by-side concerts for the young musicians with their Houston Symphony mentors playing Carmina Burana, conducted by Houston Symphony Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada.
