Cameron Mackintosh and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group has announced the casting and initial tour schedule for their spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA launching a major North American Tour in Providence, R.I. at the Providence Performing Arts Center. With newly reinvented staging and stunning scenic design, this new version of PHANTOM, the most successful musical of all-time, will be performed by a cast and orchestra of 52, making this one of the largest productions on tour in North America.
The Riverside Opera Company, under the direction of Maestro Alan Aurelia announces a performance of 'PoPera' a mix of Opera and Broadway favorites featuring long time Riverside Opera piano accompanist Ming Kwong and sopranos Jessica Sandidge and Manna Knjoi who are winners of open public auditions, held in New York City by the Riverside Opera Company. Richard Tucker Award-winning tenor Stephen Costello reprises his star turn as Nemorino in Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore at Washington National Opera (WNO) from March 20-29, following his triumphant house debut as Ishmael/Greenhorn - the role he originally created - in WNO's recent East Coast premiere of Moby-Dick. The Kennedy Center production kicks off a full spring for the tenor, who looks forward to headlining 'Toujours L'Amour' on April 25 at Lyric Opera Baltimore, where he will be joined by soprano Nicole Cabell in an orchestral gala celebration of French grand opera. June brings the U.S. release of Love Duets, Costello's first recording as an exclusive Warner Classics artist, on which he sings opposite his wife and fellow Tucker Award-winner, soprano Ailyn Perez. She also serves as his co-star in WNO's L'elisir as well as in two productions of La traviata, at Covent Garden (May 6-20) and San Francisco Opera (July 5-13), and a Rigoletto in Hamburg (May 24-June 1).
Diana Damrau will add a new role to her extensive repertory when she sings her first-ever performances of Amina, the title character in Bellini's bel canto showpiece La Sonnambula. Last season, Damrau made an acclaimed role debut as Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata in a sold-out series of performances at the Met. La Sonnambula, which opens tonight, March 14 in a revival of Mary Zimmerman's 2009 production, will be conducted by Marco Armiliato and also star rising Mexican tenor Javier Camarena as Elvino and Italian bass Michele Pertusi as Rodolfo.
French soprano Natalie Dessay makes her highly anticipated New York recital debut tonight, March 12 at 8:00 p.m. at Carnegie Hall in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage, joined by pianist and frequent collaborator Philippe Cassard. Ms. Dessay and Mr. Cassard recently released an acclaimed recording of Debussy's works in 2012 (Virgin Classics), two of which are featured in this program-'Apparition,' and 'La romance d'Ariel.' The piece pulls together massive forces of orchestra, chorus and soloists for an impassioned and dramatic blockbuster of human emotion. Perhaps best known for the famous 'Dies irae' movement, prevalent in pop culture in movies, advertisements and television, Verdi's masterpiece depicts a journey from terror and darkness to joy and light.
