Washington National Opera Adds Diana Damrau to Celebrity Concert Lineup 4/8

Washington National Opera presents German soprano Diana Damrau in recital as part of its Celebrity Concert Series on Monday, April 8 at 8 p.m. in the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater. Accompanied by harpist Xavier de Maistre, Damrau will perform selections from Schubert, R. Strauss, Hahn, Chausson, Duparc, and more.

Piotr Beczala to Sing First Met Performances in Title Role of Gounod's FAUST, 3/21

Piotr Beczala will sing the title role in Gounod's Faust for the first time at the Met beginning March 21, opposite Marina Poplavskaya as Marguerite, a role she sang in the 2011 premiere of Des McAnuff's production. Alain Altinoglu, who led Faust at the Met last season, returns to conduct the opera, which also stars John Relyea as the diabolical Mephistopheles, Alexey Markov as Valentin, and Julie Boulianne as Siebel.

Diana Damrau Sings Her First-Ever Performances of Violetta in The Met's LA TRAVIATA

Diana Damrau will make her role debut as the courtesan Violetta in La Traviata, conducted by Yannick Nezet-Seguin in his first Met performances of the Verdi tragedy. Saimir Pirgu sings Violetta's lover Alfredo, and Placido Domingo sings the role of Alfredo's father, Giorgio Germont, in this revival of Willy Decker's 2010 production. This season's performances will be Damrau's first time singing the role of Violetta anywhere, while Domingo will move from the tenor role of Alfredo, which he has sung at the Met numerous times since 1970, to the baritone role of Giorgio.

Little Orchestra Society Presents TUBBY THE TUBA, 3/16

On Saturday March 16th, The Little Orchestra Society presents the event of the season, a performance of Tubby the Tuba with narration by the legendary Patti Smith. Led by Guest Conductor David Alan Miller, this is described as a unique take on a classic will follow Tubby in his discovery of melody and sound.

Opera San José Presents Suor Angelica & Gianni Schicchi in April

Opera San Jose continues its 29th season with Suor Angelica & Gianni Schicchi, a double-bill of Giacomo Puccini operas with libretti by Giovacchino Forzano. A young nun struggles with despair in an effort to seek redemption in Suor Angelica. In sharp contrast, Gianni Schicchi, a farce based on a single mention in Dante's Inferno, is filled with greed, laughter, and family drama, and includes the beautiful aria "O mio babbino caro." Suor Angelica & Gianni Schicchi will be sung in Italian with English supertitles. Eight performances are scheduled from April 13 through 28 at the California Theatre, 345 South First Street in downtown San Jose. The Suor Angelica & Gianni Schicchi production is made possible, in part, by a Cultural Affairs Grant from the City of San Jose.

Dwayne Croft and Ildar Abdrazakov Play 'Escamillo' in The Met's CARMEN, Feb-March 2013

Casting is announced for the role of Escamillo for this season's remaining performances of Carmen. DWayne Croft will sing the role tonight, February 20 and February 26, and March 1, and Ildar Abdrazakov will sing the role on February 23 matinee, a performance that will be broadcast around the world over the Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera Radio Network.

In this evening's performance of Bizet's Carmen, Hei-Kyung Hong sang Micaela, replacing Ekaterina Scherbachenko, who is ill. General Director Irene Dalis announced the repertoire for the company's 30th season to begin Saturday, September 7, 2013 with Verdi's masterwork Falstaff, conducted by Opera San José's founding music director and principal conductor, David Rohrbaugh. In November, Opera San José will present Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, a family classic to welcome the holiday season. Acclaimed stage director Brad Dalton returns in 2014 to direct Puccini's bittersweet Madama Butterfly. The season will culminate with Mozart's Don Giovanni conducted by George Cleve, founder and music director of the Midsummer Mozart Festival.

Renée Fleming and Susan Graham Appear at Lyric Opera of Chicago Tonight

Soprano Renée Fleming and mezzo-soprano Susan Graham, world-renowned stars who are also great favorites of Lyric Opera audiences, will collaborate in Soirée française, an elegant evening of French music tonight, January 24, at 8pm at the Civic Opera House. Bradley Moore will be at the piano.

Ailyn Pérez Wins 15th Annual Plácido Domingo Award

American soprano Ailyn Perez earned yet another honor on Wednesday when she was named the winner of the 15th annual Placido Domingo Award. The prestigious award, personally given by Maestro Domingo to an artist of his choosing, celebrates the accomplishments of Hispanic artists as well as those who contribute to the awareness of opera and its educational value in the Latino community of Los Angeles. Earlier this year, Perez also won the namesake award of one of the other legendary tenors in opera's history - the 2012 Richard Tucker Award. Born in Chicago to Mexican parents, Perez is the first Hispanic singer to receive the Richard Tucker Award in its 34-year history.
