Ten Chimneys, offering a revealing look at Broadway legends Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, will be presented in a staged reading starring Dana Ivey (The Importance of Being Earnest), Boyd Gaines (Driving Miss Daisy) and Lisa Banes (Go Back to Where You Are) by The Acting Company on Monday, March 14 at 7pm at the Mainstage Theater of Playwrights Horizons, 416 West 42nd Street. Directed by David Ira Goldstein, artistic director of Arizona Theatre Company, where Ten Chimneys had its recent World Premiere, the play is by Jeffrey Hatcher (Tuesdays with Morrie, Murder by Poe). Today, the first exhibition to chronicle the career of Tennessee Williams with drawings by legendary artist Al Hirschfeld opens in the French Quarter. On view at The Historic New Orleans Collection's Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres St., 'Drawn to Life: Al Hirschfeld and the Theater of Tennessee Williams' features 125 items, including 50 drawings by the self-described 'characterist' and 75 items from The Collection's permanent holdings relating to the great American playwright.
I'll resist the temptation to call director Paul Alexander's Off-Broadway mounting of Dracula anemic or toothless, but will note his remarkable achievement of assembling a production that manages to be aggressively bad in so many ways and yet never achieves the 'you gotta see how bad this is' status. Though plagued by inept acting, questionable character choices, cheap-looking (and sounding) effects and a glacial pace, the evening is too dull to be enjoyed on any level.
