On October 5 and 6, 2012, Cornish College of the Arts will present Our Creative Society, the first of an annual program centered on a theme that reflects the cultural currents and discourse taking place at the College and in the community. The event will be anchored in Cornish's mission and revolves around conversations and topics that relate to the development and cultivation of our students as artists, innovators and citizens.
The Broadway musical SISTER ACT will play its final Broadway performance today, Sunday, August 26, 2012, prior to kicking off a North American tour on October 2 at Toronto's Ed Mirvish Theatre. Upon closing after a 16-month run, the Broadway production will have played 28 previews and 561 performances at the Broadway Theatre. Shakespeare Orange County will present William Shakespeare's MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING through September 1 at Garden Grove's Festival Amphitheatre ---outside and 'Under the Stars.' Set during the 1920s, this production features costumes and music of the era. The Festival Amphitheatre will allow audiences to enjoy watching the story of 'Beatrice and Benedick' unfold through the brilliant language and action of the play performed by professional actors from an open-air stage. This fall the National Yiddish Theatre - Folksbiene will revive "The Golden Land," for five weeks, from Sunday October 28 to December 2, with an opening on Sunday November 4 at 6pm. Created by Zalmen Mlotek and Moishe Rosenfeld, and directed by Bryna Wasserman, "The Golden Land" uses period music and other source material to create 'a richly textured evocation of New York as it absorbed wave upon wave of Jewish immigrants from the 1880's into the 1910s, and again, in a second starkly different phase immediately before and after World War II.'
Chautauqua Theater Company's Artistic Director Vivienne Benesch has announced the final production of CTC's 29th season: Shakespeare's glorious As You Like It. Director Jackson Gay (3C, Rattlestick; A Little Journey, 2012 Drama Desk Nomination, The Mint) makes her CTC debut with a 1930's swing era slant on Shakespeare's funniest and most frolicsome play. Composer Justin Ellington (Other Desert Cities, Lincoln Center; 2010 Grammy Award Winner) infuses the festivities with a bubbling score performed live by the sixteen member cast.

Berkshire Playwrights Lab announced that its staged reading of James DeMarse's new play, Existing Privilege, that was to be directed by Matthew Penn on August 8 will now take place on August 22, directed by Joe Cacaci, and with the new title, Ceasefire.

Tony winner Mark Rylance, who was set to perform in the Shakespeare-inspired opening ceremony for the 2012 Summer Olympics, has dropped out of the event due to a death in his family. Rylance said in a statement through the Old Globe: 'our beloved daughter and sister Nataasha passed away of unsuspected natural causes early on Sunday morning.'
