BWW Interviews: J. Hernandez Discusses His Work on the Shakespearean Stage

J Hernandez never really expected to become a professional actor. 'Personally, I didn't think I was very good at it,' he laughs. Fortunately, others disagreed. Tonight, he opens in FROST/NIXON at New City Stage in Philadelphia. For Hernandez, who specializes in classical theatre, it marks a significant transition. It is his first role in a contemporary play in five years. Since gaining his MFA at the University of Virginia in 2008, Hernandez has been in steady demand on the Shakespearean stage. He will return to that familiar territory later this season in the role of Mercutio for Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre's ROMEO AND JULIET.

Takacs Quartet to Perform the Complete Bartók String Quartets at Carnegie Hall, 1/18-19

On Saturday, January 18 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, January 19 at 3:00 p.m., in Zankel Hall, the critically acclaimed Takacs Quartet performs a complete Bartok string quartet cycle-a musical touchstone of the 20th century, composed over a span of three decades. On January 18, Takacs Quartet presents quartets numbers 1, 3, and 5, followed by numbers 2, 4, and 6 on January 19, showcasing the development of the prolific composer's compositional style throughout the years.

BWW CD Reviews: David Lanz's Beautiful MOVEMENTS OF THE HEART

The latest release by pianist/composer David Lanz is called MOVEMENTS OF THE HEART, and that title accurately sums up the tone and tenor of the CD. These thirteen songs reflect the variety of emotions and feelings that accompany being in love. Fittingly enough, two of the compositions are co-written by David's new romantic interest, Kristin Amarie. From top to bottom, this is an absolutely lovely work.
