Eddie Izzard to Replace Spader in RACE on Broadway

The New York Times is reporting that Eddie Izzard will take over for James Spader in RACE beginning on June 21st. This now completes the new cast along with Afton C. Williamson and Dennis Haysbert along with Richard Thomas who will remain with the show.

Afton C. Williamson to Take Over for Washington in RACE June 15

The producers of RACE have announced that Afton C. Williamson, who made her Broadway debut in Joe Turner's Come and Gone, will take over the role of 'Susan' from Kerry Washington, beginning Tuesday, June 15th. Williamson made a striking impression on the creative team when, as understudy, she replaced Kerry Washington the one night Kerry missed a performance, due to a previous obligation to go to the White House as part of the President's national Arts Council.

Masterworks Broadway to Release PROMISES, PROMISES 6/22

MASTERWORKS BROADWAY proudly announces the upcoming release of the New Broadway Cast Recording of PROMISES, PROMISES. Kristin Chenoweth: Newsweek Article Was 'Horrendously Homophobic'

In a recent Newsweek article, author Ramin Setoodeh asks 'Heterosexual actors play gay all the time. Why doesn't it ever work in reverse?' Hayes' co-star, stage and screen favorite Kristin Chenoweth has authored a response to the Newsweek article, which she refers to as 'horrendously homophobic.'

Spader, Grier & Washington to Depart RACE in June; Show to Run through August

2010 Tony Award nominee DAVID ALAN GRIER and acclaimed film star KERRY WASHINGTON will conclude their critically acclaimed performances in David Mamet's RACE on SUNDAY, JUNE 13th. Emmy Award winner JAMES SPADER, in the pivotal role of lawyer 'Jack Lawson', will play his final performance on SUNDAY, JUNE 20th.

PROMISES, PROMISES with Hayes & Chenoweth to Play Bway Theatre, Opens 4/25

Broadway Across America (John Gore, Thomas B. McGrath, Beth Williams), Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, Candy Spelling and The Weinstein Company will present the first-ever Broadway revival of PROMISES, PROMISES this spring at the Broadway Theater (1681 Broadway). Previews will begin on Sunday, March 28th, 2010 with an opening night slated for Sunday, April 25th, 2010. The musical is written by legends Neil Simon (book), Burt Bacharach (music), and Hal David (lyrics). Emmy Award winner Sean Hayes will make his Broadway debut starring in the role of Chuck Baxter opposite Tony and Emmy Award winner Kristin Chenoweth, returning to Broadway as Fran Kubelik. Tony and Emmy Award winner Rob Ashford will also make his Broadway directorial debut and choreograph. More casting and creative team members will be announced in the near future.

Photo Coverage: RACE Stars Receive Sardi's Portraits

On Thursday, April 22, RACE stars James Spader, David Alan Grier and Kerry Washington received portraits on the famed Sardi's wall (co-star Richard Thomas has previously been inducted for a prior performance but was on hand to celebrate). BroadwayWorld was there to capture the event.

David Mamet's RACE Recoups on Broadway

To celebrate the arrival of spring, RACE will take over Times Square on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 from 11 am - 1 pm and will have nearly two dozen women wear red sequined dresses for the public. This event will also celebrate the fact that RACE is currently the longest-running play of this Broadway season. The women will be coming from all over the city to wear the show's famous red sequined dress, a major plot point in the play.

GLEE, LYDIA, et. al Win GLAAD LA Awards

5 Additional GLAAD Media Award winners were announced at the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on April 17th. Winners included GLEE, 'A Single Man,' and the Los Angeles play, LYDIA, by Octavio Solis. The awards were presented at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.
