Over the past twelve years, The Playwrights Realm, led by Founding Artistic Director Katherine Kovner and Producing Director Roberta Pereira, has continually produced work by brave new voices and expanded its commitment to providing holistic support to playwrights striving to make a life in the arts. With its 2018-2019 Writing Fellowship, The Playwrights Realm is proud to grant a career-propelling honor to four tremendously talented playwrights exhibiting drive and commitment to the form: Bleu Beckford-Burrell (Lyons Pride), Sarah Einspanier (I LOVE SEAN), Keelay Gipson (#NewSlaves), andElse C. Went (Saving Throw).
In September, The Studio Theatre Tierra del Sol (806 San Marino Drive, The Villages, FL) will open the first production of its third season with the musical The Story of My Life, with Music & Lyrics by Neil Bartram and Book by Brian Hill.
Cleveland Play House (CPH) brings to life Lynn Nottage's complex story of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Rust Belt drama Sweat. Set in Reading, PA, this relevant story offers audience members suspense through its intricate portrayal of characters battling to survive in a city crippled by economic stagnation. CPH Artistic Director Laura Kepley will direct. Previews begin on October 13th, with press opening on October 19th at the Outcalt Theatre in Playhouse Square. The Warner Theatre will present its 7th Annual International Playwrights Festival held in the Warner's Nancy Marine Studio Theatre on October 12 and 13, 2018. The mission of the International Playwrights Festival is to recognize the work of emerging and established playwrights and to build a link between the playwrights, the theatre community and our audiences.
The public is invited to a special screening of the documentary "BUILDING A GREAT LIFE" on Thursday, October 18 at 5:30 PM in the Warner's Nancy Marine Studio Theatre. The event is free, but registration is required. The one-hour documentary explores how the notion of closing state institutions in favor of community living for persons with intellectual disabilities is both a moral and fiscal debate. Light refreshments will be served and a facilitated discussion will follow the meeting.
Gulfshore Playhouse's Sixth Annual New Works Festival takes place October 4-7, and it is not one to be missed! This is a very unique chance to get an inside look at the process of creating a new play and bringing it to life.
DNAWORKS presents a series of events on the campus of Texas Christian University (TCU) between October 9 and 23 that highlights the relationship and impact that the arts can play in social justice and equity work. Events of this residency range from a TCU Community Leaders Workshop to a multimedia dance performance, concluding with a Community Town Hall Meeting.
