Writer/activist Alice Walker (b. Feb. 9, 1944) made history as the first African-American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her seminal novel The Color Purple (1982), for which she won the National Book Award. THIRTEEN's American Masters presents Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth, premiering nationally Friday, February 7 at 9 p.m. on PBS in honor of Walker's 70th birthday and Black HISTORY Month. Filmmaker Pratibha Parmar's new documentary tells Walker's dramatic life story with poetry and lyricism, and features new interviews with Walker, Steven Spielberg, Danny Glover, Quincy Jones, Gloria Steinem, Sapphire and the late Howard Zinn in one of his final interviews. Beginning on June 21, 2013, New York's WLIW21 invites the public around the world to contribute footage that answers the question - 'What is sacred to you?' Footage shot during the 365-day filming period and contributed via the film's Web site (www.sacredthemovie.org) will be edited together into a sweeping mosaic portrait of spiritual and religious life on earth.
All-Star Orchestra Signs National Broadcasting Distribution Agreement

The All-Star Orchestra, comprised of top players from major orchestras in the United States, and led by Music Director Gerard Schwarz, has signed an agreement with WNET, the parent company of THIRTEEN – in partnership with American Public Television – for national distribution of the orchestra's first eight programs of classical masterpieces. American Public Television provides programming for the country's 354 public television stations including THIRTEEN, America's flagship public media station in New York.
