BWW Reviews: Fantasy Meets Reality in A Noise Within's THE TEMPEST

The dueling forces of light and dark are constantly at play in A Noise Within's fantasy-meets-reality world of Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST, the first production of its 2014-15 season. Deborah Strang takes on the role of Prospero in a gender-switch that now finds mother and daughter (rather than father and daughter) stranded on an island some twelve years after Prospero's brother Antonio (Time Winters) has usurped her power in Milan and set them both adrift in a boat to die at sea.

A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed classical repertory theatre company, continues their family holiday tradition by presenting its production of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, the ultimate tale of forgiveness, opening Saturday, December 7 and closing Sunday, December 22, 2013. This is the second year that ANW has presented the timeless holiday classic, once again accompanied by a special fundraiser event, "Fezziwig's Festive Holiday Tea" on December 8, which directly supports Classics Live! - ANW's education programs. The event will feature a live auction hosted by NBC4's Fritz Coleman.

Pericles is performed in repertory withThe Guardsman by Ferenc Molnar, October 5 through November 30, and Endgame by Samuel Beckett, October 26 to November 23.

A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed classical repertory theatre company, offers a free, one-night-only reading of SARAH RUHL's humorous and heartbreaking LATE: A COWBOY SONG on Wednesday, April 17, 7 pm, as part of its "Words Within" reading series at its Pasadena theatre. Directed by Susan Angelo and featuring A Noise Within resident artists, Ruhl's genre-defying ode to the contemporary cowboy pays homage to Frank Capra's iconic film It's a Wonderful Life. In her signature quirky style, the two-time Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright utilizes convention only to break with it, offering a meditation on the idiosyncrasies of American culture while challenging definitions of love, partnership, gender and tradition. The Chicago Times describes the work, which premiered in 2010, as "gentle and knowing" and "a play about all manner of uncertainties." The New City Chicago critic proclaimed, "I wouldn't be surprised if Late: A Cowboy Song quickly becomes a modern classic."

A Noise Within Announces TOBACCO ROAD Reading, 1/8

A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed classical repertory theatre company, offers a free, one-night-only reading of JACK KIRKLAND's powerful drama TOBACCO ROAD on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, 7 pm, in its new state-of-the-art Pasadena theatre. Directed by Apollo Dukakis and featuring A Noise Within resident artists, this Depression-Era Broadway blockbuster, which exposes the South's social and racial injustices with biting satirical humor, portrays an ignorant, dysfunctional and hardscrabble family of Georgia sharecroppers whose spirits are as depleted as the soil in which they toil. Family patriarch Jeeter Lester and his clan are caught up in the excesses of evangelism and the dark side of lust as they strive just to survive the devastation of poverty. Tobacco Road, based on the novel by Erskine Caldwell, holds the record as the second longest running non-musical in Broadway history.

A Noise Within Resident Artists Holds Free Reading of PERIOD OF ADJUSTMENT

A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed classical repertory theatre company, offers a free, one-night-only reading of TENNESSEE WILLIAMS' holiday themed PERIOD OF ADJUSTMENT on Wednesday, December 12, 7 pm, in its new state-of-the-art Pasadena theatre. Directed by Deborah Strang and featuring A Noise Within resident artists, this rarely performed play about two couples on Christmas Eve is Williams' only comedy. The reading, for which reservations are recommended, is designed to compliment ANW's production of Charles Dickens' masterpiece A Christmas Carol, which plays in repertory from December 8 to 23, 2012.

Other remaining performances are Friday, May 18, 8pm; Sunday, May 20, 2pm; Saturday, May 26, 8pm; and Sunday, May 27, 2pm (closing).
