New BWW Series - TRANSLATING SPORTS: College Football Edition
by Matt Tamanini - Aug 30, 2013

Last week I began a quest to unite two quintessentially American institutions; sports and musical theatre. Though this might be nothing more than an impossible dream, this is my quest, to follow that goal, no matter how hopeless, no matter how far... I have to take this metaphor. In this week's edition of TRASLATING SPORTS, I will attempt to provide you with enough college football information so that you won't be left with nothing more than a vegetarian bratwurst and a confused look on your face at your neighbor's Labor Day cookout.

Photo Flash: Lynn Ahrens Leaves Special Message for Newtown's SEUSSICAL
by Nicole Rosky - Aug 12, 2013

For the last 5 weeks, a dedicated team of Broadway professionals - led by 3 of the same individuals who produced a Broadway tribute to the Newtown community in Waterbury last January - has been working with more than 100 Newtown area students in a production of Seussical the Musical. It is the first of what is to be many tangible practices in healing offered by the 12.14 Foundation (the foundation's president and founder, Newtown resident Michael Baroody, serves as Executive Producer of this production). It is comfort and healing in the true sense. The big event was held over the weekend and lyricist Lynn Ahrens left a special message (in rhyme) for the cast in the show's program. Check out what she had to say below!

Michael Unger to Direct SEUSSICAL for 12.14 Foundation in Newtown
by Nicole Rosky - Aug 5, 2013

When more than 100 students from the Newtown area go back to school in the Fall, they will have some amazing tales to tell of their summer. As director Michael Unger works with the cast on their roles, he encourages them to look inward to develop their characters. This is what will eventually be a hallmark program of the 12.14 Foundation as it seeks to strengthen Newtown's youth through the arts. It is something that is mentioned often among these budding artists: that sense of camaraderie and strength.

BWW Reviews: Mary Testa's ON BROADWAY ...AND A LITTLE OFF! is an Exquisite Experience
by David Clarke - Aug 3, 2013

Since we're living in Houston, I promise I won't be upset with you if you tell me you don't know who Mary Testa is. What you first need to understand is that the theatrical gods divinely intervened in her creation. Imagine if Bette Midler and Patti LuPone had a child and named her Mary. Got it? Good. Now, you're beginning to understand why Mary Testa is a theatrical tour de force. With two Tony Awards and other various New York theatre awards under her belt, she has proven herself to be a phenomenal talent that you should not miss.

BWW Reviews: The Playhouse Presents a Beautiful, Effective, Understated RAGTIME
by Jeff Davis - Aug 1, 2013

Everyone loves a good "The Show Must Go On" story, and they don't get much better than the story of The Playhouse's current production of Ragtime which plays The Charline McCombs Empire Theatre now through August 18th. Though originally planned for The Playhouse's Russell Hill Rogers Theatre, plans changed after the recent San Antonio flood damaged the historic structure, causing the need for major repairs. While a late change in venue is a major curve ball for any production, any problems that it may have caused are nowhere to be seen. While stripped of the grandiose design which usually accompanies the epic American musical, The Playhouse's version is still quite alluring and emotionally stirring.
