With Labor Day in the rearview mirror, students all across the county are now diligently back to work on yet another school year. While students and teachers alike are back in their routines of homework and extracurriculars, BroadwayWorld's Jeff Walker and Matt Tamanini are focusing their monthly feature on the showtunes that celebrate the highs and lows of school and learning.

Broadway's 40 theatres aren't the only places to catch performances from your favorite stars! Well after Broadway orchestras begin their overtures, ensemble members take their dance breaks, and performers belt out their eleven o'clock numbers, the party continues at various cabaret venues throughout New York City. Below, BroadwayWorld brings you some cabaret highlights for this week as picked by our theatre editors, including: Robert Creighton at 54 Below; Whitney Bashor at 54 Below; Will Swenson at 54 Below; Cry-Baby Reunion Concert; and Broadway Back to School 2015.

If ever a show has become part of the 'fabric' of New York and pop culture, it's the Tony Award-winning musical Avenue Q, with its colorful -- in costume and in language -- cast of humans and puppets. The ground-breaking musical hits a new landmark today, July 31, when it celebrates its 12th anniversary at New World Stages (340 W. 50 St.), where AVENUE Q has performed for the past six years, following its triumphant six-year run on Broadway. New Dramatists, Tony Honor recipient and the nation's premier playwright development laboratory, just honored Tony Award winning actor and Chairman of the Board of The Actors Fund, Brian Stokes Mitchell with their 2015 Distinguished Achievement Award at its 66th Annual Spring Luncheon tribute. The event featured musical performances from some of Mitchell's most memorable shows by Tony Award winner Leslie Uggams (King Hedley II, Hallelujah Baby), Nicolette Robinson (Brooklynite, TV's 'The Affair,' 'Hart of Dixie') and Leslie Odom, Jr. (Hamilton, NBC's 'Smash'), and Tony nominated Stephanie D'Abruzzo (Avenue Q, Carnival at City Center Encores!). Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a star-studded 2015-16 season of music, dance, theater, comedy, film and more. Among the many highlights are performances by BalletBoyz, Margaret Cho, Joan Collins, Alan Cumming, Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, Ana Gasteyer, The Hot Sardines, Jane Lynch, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and The TEN Tenors, all of whom will be making their Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts debuts, alongside returning favorites such as Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt, Arturo Sandoval and Poncho Sanchez, Martin Short, and Tommy Tune.

Michael Haynie (Wicked, Peter Pan LIVE!), Larry Hamilton (Captain Louie) and Nicholas Barnes (Skippyjon Jones) and are now slated to perform.

Tonight, April 13th, The 24 Hour Company is teaming with the Exchange, an off-Broadway theater company, to create the seventh 24 Hour Musicals. A team of more than 100 - including stars from Broadway, film, television, and music - will cast, write, compose, direct, rehearse, tech, and perform four original musicals - all in the obscenely short time between an evening meet-and-greet on Sunday, April 12 and show time tonight, April 13 at 8pm. The event benefits the Exchange's summer program, The Orchard Project, which incubates and accelerates innovative new theatrical work from around the world.

The evening honored the acclaimed Musicals in Mufti Series and its landmark 100th production. All proceeds will benefit The York Theatre Company and the Musicals in Mufti Series.
