BWW Review: Technically Superior VIOLET at ArtsWest Lacks Emotional Connection

There's no doubt that Jeanine Tesori's music in the musical "Violet", currently playing at ArtsWest, is stirring and powerful but it's the lyrics and book by Brian Crawley that truly pack the punch in the show. But of course they would as the show is rife with hot button topics of that era as well as our own. And while the ensemble manages some of the tightest and most technically proficient performances I've seen I didn't always get from them the importance or danger associated with the stakes of those issues and so didn't always feel the emotional connection to the story.

Stage and Screen Vet John Goodman Boards Boston Marathon Film PATRIOTS DAY

CBS Films and Lionsgate announced that Golden Globe-winner John Goodman (10 Cloverfield Lane, Inside Llewyn Davis, Argo) will join Academy Award-Winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash, Zootopia) and Academy Award-nominee Mark Wahlberg (The Departed, Lone Survivor) in PATRIOTS DAY.

freeFall Theatre's SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM Starts Tonight

freeFall Theatre continues a strong tradition of musical theatre hits with an intimate portrait of Broadway icon Stephen Sondheim in his own words and music. Chris Crawford directs and stages the Tampa Bay area premiere of James Lapine's award-winning Broadway hit, SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM. Opening night is tonight, March 12 at 8pm.

BANSHEE Returns to Cinemax in April for Final Season

BANSHEE returns for its eight-episode fourth and final season FRIDAY, APRIL 1 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on CINEMAX. Alan Ball, Greg Yaitanes, Jonathan Tropper, Peter Macdissi, Adam Targum and Ole Christian Madsen executive produce.

Aurora Extends West Coast Premiere of THE HOW AND THE WHY

Due to popular pre-sale demand, Aurora Theatre Company announces that it will again extend the West Coast Premiere of Sarah Treem's (Netflix's House of Cards, HBO's In Treatment, Showtime's The Affair) thought-provoking THE HOW AND THE WHY, the third fully staged production to be performed in the company's second stage performance space, Harry's UpStage. Acclaimed Bay Area actress and director Joy Carlin (Talley's Folly, After the Revolution, Body Awareness, Jack Goes Boating, Awake and Sing!) helms this intimate and keenly perceptive play. The company will add an additional two weeks of performances to the previously extended run dates. Originally extended through May 8, THE HOW AND THE WHY now plays through May 22nd (added performances: Tuesday, May 10, 7pm; Wednesday, May 11, 8pm; Thursday, May 12, 8pm; Friday, May 13, 8pm; Saturday, May 14, 8pm; Sunday, May 15, 2pm; Tuesday, May 17, 7pm; Wednesday, May 18, 8pm; Thursday, May 19, 8pm; Friday, May 20, 8pm; Saturday, May 21, 8pm; Sunday, May 22, 2pm) at the Aurora Theatre in Berkeley. TUNE IN TIME Returns to York Theatre Company Next Week

The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director;  Evans Haile, Interim Executive Director) welcomes the return engagement of the game show for musical theater lovers called Tune in Time, presented by Amy Engelhardt and Heather Shields, with an evening celebrating Broadway's Online/Internet Showstopperson Monday, March 14, 2016 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at The York Theatre Company at Saint Peter's (Citicorp Building, entrance on East 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue). 

CCBC Essex Academic Theatre to Present The Menaechmi Twins
