The 16th annual Boston Celtic Music Festival, known as BCMFest, returns to Harvard Square January 17-20, 2019. Presented by Passim, a Cambridge-based non-profit that supports a vibrant music community through Club Passim, the Passim School of Music, artist grants and outreach initiatives, the 2019 festival will showcase Greater Boston's deep tradition of music, song and dance from Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton and other Celtic communities. Steve Martin's and Edie Brickell's Bright Star played Broadway in 2016. The show fared somewhat well, but did not seem to be an overall critics' choice. On the minus side, it is an all too familiar story about a backwoods pregnant girl and parental abuse in the 1920s, with far-fetched resolutions and a sweet, but for many, saccharine ending. In spite of this, I was delighted with the bluegrass music by Martin and Brickell.
The Muny announced today updates regarding its multi-million-dollar stage renovation. After several weeks, demolition of the existing stage area is now complete; all that remains are the scenery booms, which will be upgraded for the theatre's second century.

The Palm Springs ensemble took home 11 "Desert Stars Awards" at last night's 31st annual Desert Theatre League Gala held in Palm Desert, having been nominated for 23 awards in 19 categories. The tally was a record for the company and included "Best Production" honors in both comedy and drama and also two awards for the group's founding artistic director, Michael Shaw: one for acting, and one for directing.
