Civic Acts: New Plays Toward The Beloved Community is Civic Ensemble's new play festival in Ithaca featuring new political plays by nationally and internationally renowned playwrights whose work centers on women and people of color. These plays deal with the challenges our communities face in moving society toward what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called The Beloved Community. Civic Acts is one of the rare new play festivals in the United States devoted to socially-engaged theatre. The Beloved Community, first articulated by early 20th-century philosophers Josiah Royce and Randolph Bourne, is a vision where people of diverse racial, ethnic, educational, class, gender, sexual orientation backgrounds/identities seek to realize justice within the community and in the broader world.

Animus Theatre Company (Jonathan Judge-Russo, Founding Artistic Director), are thrilled to welcome Sarah Utterback of ABC's hit primetime TV drama Grey's Anatomy and Jessica Pimentel of Netflix's Orange Is the New Black to the New York premiere of Surfer Girl, part of Leslye Headland's Sin Cycle Plays. Sunday, Sept 24, at the New Ohio Theatre in Manhattan took place a reading of DREAM ACTS (written by Chiori Miyagawa, Saviana Stanescu, Andrea Thome, Jessica Litwak, and Mia Chung), directed by Saviana Stanescu, as part of the American AF pop-up festival, centralizing black, brown, queer and radical artistic/political voices.

Samuel French has assembled a distinguished judging panel including playwrights Jiehae Park, James Hindman, Lauren Yee and Rachel Bonds; Artistic Directors Andrew Leynse (Primary Stages), Jonathan Silverstein (Keen Company), Susan Westfall (City Theatre, Miami), Emily Morse (New Dramatists) and Ciera Iverson (National Alliance of Musical Theatres); and industry professionals John Clinton Eisner (The Lark), Michael Walkup (Page 73), Abigail Katz (Atlantic Theater Company).
