The 55th Annual Evening Standards Theatre Awards, honoring outstanding achievements in London Theater, today has released their long list of 2009 nominees. The award ceremony, which will take place on November 23 at the Royal Opera House, will honor some of theater's biggest stars, including Ian McKellen, Kevin Spacey, Sam Mendes, and more. Sponsored by U.K'.s Evening Standard newspaper, with nominees selected by a panel of London theater critics, the shortlist of nominees will be sometime next week.

MATILDA, a new musical based on author Roald Dahl's 1988 children's book of the same name will be staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. The musical will premiere in late 2010, under the direction of Tony Award winner Matthew Warchus, with book by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.
ENRON, written by Lucy Prebble, recently began a six-week run at London's Royal Court Theatre on September 17 and will move to the West End's Noel Coward Theatre on January 16, prior to an official opening Jan. 26, 2010. It will replace the soon-to-close CALENDAR GIRLS. The New York Times is reporting that the production will move to Broadway at a Shubert Theater to be determined in April 2010. The Broadway transfer will be produced by Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel, Matthew Byam Shaw, Act Productions, Caro Newling for Neal St. Productions and the Shubert Organization.

Simon Callow (Pozzo) and Ronald Pickup (Lucky) will join Ian McKellen (Estragon) and Patrick Stewart (Vladimir) in Sean Mathias' Theatre Royal Haymarket production of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot. Waiting for Godot follows two consecutive days in the lives of Vladimir and Estragon, who divert themselves by clowning around, joking and arguing, while waiting expectantly and unsuccessfully for the mysterious Godot. Beckett's Waiting for Godot exploded on to the London stage over 50 years ago when it shocked as many people as it delighted.
