Houston Grand Opera Names Finalists for 2015 Concert of Arias

Houston, TX - February 4, 2015: Houston Grand Opera announced today the finalists for the annual Eleanor McCollum Competition for Young Singers Concert of Arias, to be presented in the Cullen Theater at the Wortham Theater Center on Thursday, February 5, at 7 p.m. This year's finalists are:

Houston Grand Opera Presents the American Premiere of Sir Nicholas Hytner's THE MAGIC FLUTE, Now thru 2/14

Houston Grand Opera is proud to present The Magic Flute, one of two Mozart offerings for the 2014–15 season. From the coloratura pyrotechnics of the Queen of the Night to Pamina's anguished lament, to the comic love duet of Papageno and Papagena, Mozart's genius is evident as the music in The Magic Flute illustrates his unique and profound understanding of humanity. The Magic Flute marks the American premiere of Sir Nicholas Hytner's iconic English National Opera staging, in a revival directed by Ian Rutherford.

Apollo's Fire Celebrates Bach's Birthday with FAMILY FROLIC Concert Series, Beginning Tonight

Apollo's Fire reprises its popular “Fireside” series – intimate 90-minute concerts followed by coffee, hot cider and conversation with the artists. In a tribute to Bach's 330th Birthday, this intimate concert tells the musical story of a day at the Bach Family Household and features AF veteran musicians alongside Young Artist Apprentices in a true multi-generational tribute to Bach.

EarShot & BPO Select Composers for Buffalo Philharmonic New Music Readings, 2/10-11

From February 10-12, 2015, EarShot (the National Orchestral Composition Discovery Network) and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO), JoAnn Falletta, Music Director, will present the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra New Music Readings at Kleinhans Music Hall (3 Symphony Circle, Buffalo). On Wednesday, February 11 at 7pm at Kleinhans Hall, the public will have the opportunity for a behind-the-scenes look at the process of bringing brand new orchestral works to life, as music by the four selected composers is read by the BPO under the baton of associate conductor, Stefan Sanders. The composers – Cody Forrest, Jay Hurst, Yuan-Chen Li, and Scott Ordway – were selected through a national call for scores, and during the Readings will receive feedback from BPO Musicians, Sanders, and mentor composers Robert Beaser of The Juilliard School and artistic director laureate of American Composers Orchestra, Rob Deemer from SUNY Fredonia, and Pulitzer Prize winner Melinda Wagner. Afterwards, the audience is invited to be a part of a discussion Q&A with the young composers, the conductor, and mentor composers.

After a resoundingly successful fall season and the launch of its new holiday opera series with the world premiere of Iain Bell and Simon Callow's A Christmas Carol, Houston Grand Opera (HGO) rings in 2015 with two beloved productions: a reprise of Michael Grandage's knockout staging of Puccini's Madame Butterfly, which triumphed at its 2010 Houston debut, and the American premiere of Sir Nicholas Hytner's iconic English National Opera staging of Mozart's The Magic Flute in a revival directed by Ian Rutherford.

BSO to Perform Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, 1/2-4

Maestro Nicholas McGegan and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) will ring in the New Year with a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 today, January 2 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, January 4 at 3 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and Saturday, January 3 at 8 p.m. at The Music Center at Strathmore. McGegan will lead the Orchestra in Beethoven's final symphony with the well-known "Ode to Joy," along with Beethoven's rarely performed Opferlied, his King Stephen Overture and Haydn's The Storm. Conductor-in-Residence Cristian Macelaru to Lead Philadelphia Orchestra, 3/12-14

The Philadelphia Orchestra's conductor-in-residence, Cristian Macelaru, replaces Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos for three concerts on March 12, 13, and 14 at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. Fruhbeck, who last season celebrated conducting more than 150 concerts with the Orchestra in Philadelphia, passed away in June.

Steven Stucky's THE CLASSICAL STYLE to Make New York Premiere at Carnegie Hall, 12/4

When Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Steven Stucky's first opera - The Classical Style: An Opera (of Sorts) - premiered at the 2014 Ojai Music Festival, it was hailed as 'a dazzling display of inventiveness and broad comical delight' (San Francisco Chronicle) that, thanks to 'the bliss and beauty of the music' (San Jose Mercury News), 'proved unexpectedly moving' (Santa Barbara Independent). Composed to a libretto by MacArthur Fellow Jeremy Denk, Stucky's comic opera - a co-commission of Carnegie Hall, Cal Performances, and the Ojai and Aspen Music Festivals - is now set to receive its East Coast premiere. On December 4, The Classical Style comes to Carnegie's Zankel Hall, where Grammy Award-winning conductor Robert Spano leads a stellar octet of vocal soloists, five of whom have been nominated for the inaugural Warner Music Prize, and New York-based orchestral collective The Knights -dubbed 'the next generation of classical music' (Performance Today host Fred Child) - in a semi-staged production by Mary Birnbaum.

Music Director Robert Spano and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) and Chorus will open the 2014-15 season on November 13, 2014, at 8:00 p.m.An additional performance will take place November 15, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. These concerts will mark the beginning of the Orchestra's 70th season and the 14th year of artistic partnership between Mr. Spano and Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles. Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Reaches Agreement

The 70th anniversary season of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will open on Thursday, November 13, after the Orchestra's musicians and management came to terms on a new four-year collective bargaining agreement this week.

Carnegie Hall to Present THE CLASSICAL STYLE: AN OPERA (OF SORTS), 12/4

On Thursday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. Carnegie Hall presents the New York premiere of Steven Stucky and Jeremy Denk's The Classical Style: An Opera (of Sorts), with Robert Spano conducting The Knights, together with soprano Jennifer Zetlan, mezzo-sopranos Rachel Calloway and Peabody Southwell, tenors Dominic Armstrong and Keith Jameson, baritone Kim Josephson, and bass-baritones Aubrey Allicock and Ashraf Sewailam. The work, a Carnegie Hall co-commission, is directed by Mary Birnbaum in Zankel Hall.

The Richmond Symphony Presents BEETHOVEN LIVES UPSTAIRS Today

Join us at the Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage today, October 25 at 11am for the world famous production of Beethoven Lives Upstairs. The concert features a lively exchange of letters between young Christoph and his uncle discussing the “madman” (Beethoven) who has moved into the upstairs apartment of Christoph's Vienna home. Audiences will be captivated by more than twenty-five excerpts of the master's music, including the Moonlight Sonata, Fur Elise, and the great Fifth and Ninth Symphonies.
