The year was 1980, and Patti LuPone was starring as 'Evita' on Broadway. She was en route to winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, and cementing her status as a Broadway star. But there was another Patti LuPone performance taking place -- one that only a comparative handful of people were aware of: Every Saturday night at midnight, for 27 weeks, after performing one of the most demanding roles ever, she made her way to Les Mouches - a legendary nightclub in New York City, to perform a solo concert...This was a one-woman tour de force that -- until now -- only the lucky few who were on hand knew about.

Composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz and Kerry Ellis, current star of the Broadway smash WICKED, in full costume as the show's green heroine, Elphaba, The Wicked Witch of The West, lit the Empire State Building green on Monday, October 27th. The building glowed WICKED green from dusk to midnight on Monday in honor of WICKED's 5th Anniversary Celebration.

South Ark Stage (Rhoda Herrick, Producing Artistic Director) has announced that it will present the world premiere of the new chamber musical The Black Monk, with book, lyrics and music by Wendy Kesselman. Under the direction of Kevin Newbury, the four-member cast features Austin Pendleton as the Monk, Scott Robertson as Igor, Elon Rutberg as Andrei, and Sarah Ziegler as Tanya.

'Wicked' Celebrates 5th Anniversary With Series of Events; Empire State Building to Glow Green 10/30

In honor of its 5th Anniversary on Broadway on October 30, the blockbuster musical Wicked will host several special events and promotions throughout the month of October. Highlights include THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD NOT TAKEN, a one-night-only benefit performance featuring songs and scenes cut from early drafts of the musical, as well as two of New York's most recognizable landmarks going green in honor of our anniversary: on October 27, the Empire State Building will glow green for the night and on October 30, Playbill's trademark yellow banner will be specially printed green, the first time in the publication's history that it has altered its masthead.
