Golden Thread Productions, the first American theatre company devoted to the Middle East, returns to Brava with New Threads 2018, its popular and free staged reading series. This year's line-up includes plays by Turkish-American playwright Melis Aker (Manar in ReOrient 2017), recent NYU Abu Dhabi graduate Adam Ashraf Elsayigh, Bay Area-based Iraqi-Assyrian-American writer Edessa Tailo, and celebrated Romanian-French writer Matei Vi?niec. Bringing these gems to life will be four directors of Middle Eastern descent: internationally-acclaimed Egyptian actor and director Kal Naga; sought-after Iranian-American new plays director Pirronne Yousefzadeh; director and multimedia artist Nima Dehghani, who was named the "The Best Young Director of the Year' by the Iranian Theatre Directors Center in 2012; and Golden Thread's own Evren Odcikin.

Martyrs, written by Romana Soutus and developed with and directed by Pirronne Yousefzadeh, will premiere at The Downstairs at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, April 19 - May 6, Thursday to Saturday at 7 PM, Sunday at 2 PM. A devised ensemble piece performed by a female cast of nine, Martyrs dives into the dynamics of martyrdom, sainthood, self-worth, and desire.

The 102nd Season at Cleveland Play House (CPH) continues with The Invisible Hand by Pulitzer Prize-winning Author Ayad Akhtar. The Invisible Hand tells the story of American investment banker Nick Bright as he risks everything to return to his family. Held hostage in Pakistan by Islamic revolutionaries, his last chance for freedom depends on his ability to play the stock market to benefit his captors. This sharp geo-political thriller from Pulitzer Prize winner Ayad Akhtar takes us to the treacherous intersection of terrorism and capitalism, where greed and deceit prevail and no one escapes without blood on their hands. Directed by Pirronne Yousefzadeh, The Invisible Hand runs February 17th through March 11, 2018 in the Outcalt Theatre at Playhouse Square.
