ETHEL Presents 10th Anniversary NACAP Events, Now thru 9/2

The nationally acclaimed string quartet ETHEL commemorates a decade serving as the Ensemble-in-Residence of the Grand Canyon Music Festival's Native American Composer Apprentice Project (NACAP). Since 2005, ETHEL has been extending the gift of music to the underserved and rural communities of the Navajo and Hopi Indian reservations. To date, ETHEL's residency has impacted almost 18,000 students, premiered over 150 works by Native American children, and touched more than 15 schools throughout Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. WAM (Women's Action Movement) Theatre's annual benefit just got even more exciting. Artistic director Kristen van Ginhoven is pleased to announce that legendary playwright Marsha Norman and WAMC Northeast Public Radio producer Sarah LaDuke will co-host Change Makers, WAM Theatre's fifth season celebration and benefit at The Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington on August 24 at 7 pm. This dynamic duo takes the place of actor Jayne Atkinson, who needed to bow out to attend the Emmy Awards In Los Angeles.

Smuin Ballet to Open Season with UNTAMED Dance Series, 10/3-11

Smuin Ballet will kick off its 21st Season in October at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts Theatre with its Untamed Dance Series. The program features the West Coast premiere of Serenade for Strings by Wonderbound (formerly Ballet Nouveau Colorado) Artistic Director and choreographer Garrett Ammon, set to Tchaikovsky's breathtaking score. Also on the Untamed bill is Objects of Curiosity, an evocative ballet by Choreographer-in-Residence Amy Seiwert, set to a delicate score by Philip Glass and Foday Musa Suso. Smuin Ballet also brings back the tempestuous story ballet Frankie & Johnny. (NOTE: this ballet contains material that is intended for mature audiences.) The Untamed Dance Series plays October 3-11 at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts Theatre. Tickets ($24-$67) are available at www.smuinballet.org or (415) 912-1899. The Guthrie Theater today announced casting for the first production on the Wurtele Thrust Stage in the 2014-2015 season, Wendy Wasserstein's Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Heidi Chronicles. Under the direction of 2014 Tony Award nominee Leigh Silverman (Broadway's Violet, Chinglish, Well), The Heidi Chronicles will feature the talents of Kate Wetherhead, Ben Graney, Tracey Maloney and Zach Shaffer, as well as Sam Bardwell, Eleonore Dendy, Mo Perry and Stacia Rice.

From September 4-14, 2014, Houston Ballet launches its 45th season with the company premiere of John Neumeier's three-act ballet A Midsummer Night's Dream. The ballet is based on Shakespeare's lighthearted play of the same name and follows the hijinks and hilarity that ensues when a well-intentioned plan with a love potion goes awry. Created in 1977, A Midsummer Night's Dream has served as Mr. Neumeier's calling card, being seen as one of his most joyous and popular creations. Houston Ballet is the first American ballet company to perform the famous work and it is the first piece by Mr. Neumeier to enter the Houston Ballet repertoire.
