In BY THE WAY, MEET VERA STARK, now playing at Penumbra Theatre as part of their 'Womansong' season, the title character is a black actress in 1930s Hollywood who gets her big break playing a loyal slave in an antebellum Southern melodrama. She imbues the stereotypical role with as much humanity and depth as possible, and so begins a long and successful career, until she mysteriously disappears from the spotlight. Vera is a controversial figure because on the one hand her characters perpetuate the stereotypes seen in movies, but on the other hand she makes her characters as real as possible and has built a successful career for herself and opened doors for black actors in Hollywood. The play examines these issues in a funny, entertaining, innovative way, jumping across time and using video of Vera's first movie.

Steep Theatre will present the Midwest Premiere of Irish playwright Ross Dungan's The Life and Sort of Death of Eric Argyle. Steep Artistic Associate and Jeff Award-winning director Jonathan Berry returns to Steep to direct Dungan's heart-warming and magical exploration of lives lived without regret. Steep and Berry have racked up an impressive string of Midwest premieres, including last year's If There is I Haven't Found It Yet and past hits The Knowledge, Moment and Festen. The Life and Sort of Death of Eric Argyle opens at Steep Theatre on Thursday, January 22.

Artistic Director Peter Moore and Board President Ted Lowitz have announced that Kate Piatt-Eckert, who has been serving as Steep Theatre's Business Manger for over a year, will be stepping into the role of Executive Director of Steep Theatre Company.

Due to popular demand, Route 66 Theatre Company's hit world premiere The Downpour, by Caitlin Parrish, directed by Route 66 Theatre Company's Associate Artistic Director, Erica Weiss is adding one additional week of performances, extending through October 19, 2014. The Downpour is playing at the Greenhouse Theater Center: 2257 N Lincoln Avenue in Chicago. Steep Theatre Company will be launching a new ticketing program this season aimed at making its work more financially accessible to audiences. Steep will be offering 10% of its tickets to each performance for $10 each.* These general admission 'Access Tickets' will be released to the public two weeks before the opening of each production, and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Release dates and times will be announced via Facebook and Twitter, so interested patrons should engage the company through these social media outlets.

With Sexy Laundry opening tonight, the entire cast roster for the theatre's biggest season is almost complete. Nearly 300 Minnesota artists - including actors, directors, designers and technical operators - will mount 18 productions on two stages. Art collectors and owners of the Sagamore Hotel, Martin and Cricket Taplin—also the Art Hotel's curator—are pleased to announce the installation – FRAMING THE MOVING IMAGE. The exhibition explores the way artists capture, compose and represent traditions and histories, as well as the changing material landscapes – locally and globally – through the moving image.

Steep Theatre Company's 13th Season began in grand fashion on October 3rd with the North American Premiere of Motortown by Olivier Award-winning playwright Simon Stephens. The show has now been extended through November 23rd.

SteepTheatre Company has announced that it will welcome Simon Stephens as the company's inaugural Associate Playwright. Mr. Stephens is a two-time Olivier Award-winning playwright whose work has been produced extensively throughout the U.K., Europe, Australia, and the U.S. The announcement formalizes the close relationship that has developed between the Chicago theater company and theLondon-based playwright over the last few years. The title of Associate Playwright recognizes Steep's admiration for Mr. Stephens' work, their appreciation for all he has done on their behalf, and their commitment to further collaboration.

Steep Theatre Company's 13th Season will begin in grand fashion tonight, October 3rd with the North American Premiere of Motortown by Olivier Award-winning playwright Simon Stephens. The production will be directed by Steep Artistic Associate and two-time Jeff Nominated director Robin Witt. The Stephens-Witt playwright- director tandem has proven a winner in the past at Steep, resulting in two of the more memorable shows in recent Chicago theater history: Harper Regan and Pornography. Motortown will be the first Simon Stephens production in Chicago since he received the 2013 Olivier Award for Best New Play for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night. The production is also Ms. Witt's first Steep offering since her 2012 hit production of Dennis Kelly's Love and Money.
