Music Director Franz Welser-Möst continues his focus on and commitment to opera with a new production of Richard Strauss's Daphne performed by The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall May 27 and 30. For Daphne, a work the composer called a “bucolic tragedy,” the Orchestra's production brings the majesty of the outdoors to the intimate setting of Severance Hall. Los Angeles-based stage director James Darrah transforms Severance Hall into a tableau of nature, within the concert hall's classically inspired architecture. The story unfolds around the Orchestra with dance, men's chorus, and a cast of singers costumed in a contemporary interpretation of traditional Greek attire.

When Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Steven Stucky's first opera - The Classical Style: An Opera (of Sorts) - premiered at the 2014 Ojai Music Festival, it was hailed as 'a dazzling display of inventiveness and broad comical delight' (San Francisco Chronicle) that, thanks to 'the bliss and beauty of the music' (San Jose Mercury News), 'proved unexpectedly moving' (Santa Barbara Independent). Composed to a libretto by MacArthur Fellow Jeremy Denk, Stucky's comic opera - a co-commission of Carnegie Hall, Cal Performances, and the Ojai and Aspen Music Festivals - is now set to receive its East Coast premiere. On December 4, The Classical Style comes to Carnegie's Zankel Hall, where Grammy Award-winning conductor Robert Spano leads a stellar octet of vocal soloists, five of whom have been nominated for the inaugural Warner Music Prize, and New York-based orchestral collective The Knights -dubbed 'the next generation of classical music' (Performance Today host Fred Child) - in a semi-staged production by Mary Birnbaum.
On Thursday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. Carnegie Hall presents the New York premiere of Steven Stucky and Jeremy Denk's The Classical Style: An Opera (of Sorts), with Robert Spano conducting The Knights, together with soprano Jennifer Zetlan, mezzo-sopranos Rachel Calloway and Peabody Southwell, tenors Dominic Armstrong and Keith Jameson, baritone Kim Josephson, and bass-baritones Aubrey Allicock and Ashraf Sewailam. The work, a Carnegie Hall co-commission, is directed by Mary Birnbaum in Zankel Hall.

LA Opera will soon present the first full-scale production in this century of John Corigliano's grand opera buffa, one of the most acclaimed operas of our time. Extravagantly scaled, gloriously tuneful, supremely touching and yet uproariously entertaining, The Ghosts of Versailles turns history on its head as love attempts to alter the course of destiny. Running February 7- March 1, 2015, the production will feature direction by Tony winner Darko Tresnjak.

General and Artistic Director Michael Egel and the Board of Directors have announced casting for the operas of the 42nd Summer Festival Season. The three, full-scale grand operas will be presented in 15 performances between June 27 and July 20, 2014 at the Blank Performing Arts Center in Indianola Iowa. A fourth production will run for 3 performances on July 10 and 19 at the newly renovated Des Moines Social Club in Des Moines as part of the company's newly-minted 2nd Stages Series. The Summer Festival Season repertory includes the return of a timeless operatic classic paired with two operas which will be company premieres - the first is a modern masterpiece and the second is a sparkling farce by opera's greatest comedic composer, Rossini. Perhaps the most controversial opera of the 20th century makes its Southern California debut when Long Beach Opera (LBO) stages John Adams' The Death of Klinghoffer on March 16 and March 22 at the Terrace Theater in downtown Long Beach. This powerful and unsettling work chronicles the 1985 hijacking of the Mediterranean cruise ship Achille Lauro by Palestinian terrorists and the murder of disabled Jewish-American passenger, Leon Klinghoffer. LBO's production is a partner presentation of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's 'Minimalist Jukebox' Festival.
