Get ready to blast off as Rubicon Theatre Company presents the hilarious, out-of-this-world musical RETURN TO THE FORBIDDEN PLANET, returning to Ventura after its acclaimed run in 2016. Set on a spaceship sometime in the future, the show features a galaxy of rock-and-roll classics, including "Wipeout," "Good Vibrations," "Great Balls of Fire," "All Shook Up, and "Monster Mash." There is a moment during the closing scene of Andrew Lloyd Webber's School of Rock when the show transforms from a mere crowd pleasing musical, to a pure and unadulterated celebration. Having witnessed the young students of Horace Green Preparatory School fully evolve from disenfranchised, rule-following and generally unhappy children, to confident rock stars willing to 'stick it to the man,' the audience cannot help but leap to its feet and join the party at the top of Mount Rock. More than a local battle of the bands, it is a celebration of the importance of arts education, the power of inspiring teachers, the joys of finding one's voice, and of the mind-blowing capacity for so much talent to exist in such small bodies and at such an early age. Judging by the standing ovation that began before and continued throughout the curtain call, it is clear that the Orpheum audience was fully invested in these young characters, and that School of Rock had therefore done its job. Indeed, this culminating scene is the ultimate payoff that makes the two and a half hours that precede it entirely worth the investment. The only disappointment was that there was no after party on Beale Street. Armed with their instruments and boundless talent, something tells me that the students of Horace Green Preparatory School could most certainly have brought down the house.
Everything that could conceivably trip up seasoned performers - who've been reciting monologues in front of their bathroom mirrors since they were toddlers, bring down a set considered to be a landmark in design for the stage (or in the history of architecture since the Greeks built their first temple and the Romans engineered their first aqueduct), and/or send scores of trembling thespians to the emergency room after but one performance - actually befall the cast and crew of The Play That Goes Wrong.
Renowned cellist Alisa Weilerstein, recipient of a 2011 MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship, brings her technical precision and impassioned musicianship to the extraordinary task of performing all six Bach unaccompanied solo Cello Suites in a single evening on Friday, November 9, 2018, at 7:30 pm, in the Bram Goldsmith Theater at The Wallis. This season marks only the third in which she has ventured to perform all six in one evening, after years of playing the pieces individually. Weilersteinhas justly earned international acclaim for emotionally resonant performances of both traditional and contemporary music and has been lauded as "too big a talent to be pigeonholed" (New York Magazine). Bach's Cello Suites are widely considered to be among the composer's greatest works. The music, which "maps humanity in all its triumphs, joys and sorrows" (National Public Radio), was written around 1720 and largely unknown until famed cellist Pablo Casals became the first person to record all six suites, elevating their status so that they are now among the most popular and widely performed cello works ever written.
