Film Independent, the nonprofit arts organization that produces the Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival, handed out top honors to 12 Years a Slave, Dallas Buyers Club and Nebraska at this afternoon's 29th Film Independent Spirit Awards. Blue Jasmine, Fruitvale Station, Blue is the Warmest Color, Short Term 12, This is Martin Bonner and 20 Feet From Stardom also received awards at the ceremony, which is held in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica.

Popular TV and film actor Jim Belushi, who is also a Second City and College of DuPage alumnus, returns to the McAninch Arts Center (MAC) at College of DuPage (425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn) with his improv group the Board of Comedy to mark the MAC's Grand Opening Celebration with a late night performance Saturday, March 8 at 9:30 p.m. The late night performance follows the 6 p.m. 'MAC Madness' benefit performance and party hosted by the College of DuPage Foundation. The performances are part of the MAC's 2014 Grand Opening Season that marks the completion of a 14-month, $35 million renovation. Stewart Copeland-famed drummer for the iconic 80's rock band The Police-will debut his new score for the epic 1925 silent film Ben-Hur.
