AMNH Announces Schedule of Events for May 2015

Milstein Science Series: Sea Turtles Sunday, May 3, 11 am–4:30 pm Milstein Hall of Ocean Life Free for Members or with Museum admission Sea turtles are simply astounding: they lived alongside dinosaurs 150 million years ago, and still survive today. Playing a crucial role in our oceans' ecosystems, this incredible animal group is now endangered due to climate change, poaching, habitat destruction, and accidental capture in fishing gear. Learn more about these resilient aquatic creatures and the conservation efforts in place to protect them with Eleanor Sterling, chief conservation scientist for the Museum's Center for Biodiversity and Conservation; Wallace J. Nichols, scientist and New York Times-bestselling author of Blue Mind; Michael Coyne, executive director of seaturtle.org and moderated by Curator Mark Siddall. The event includes a live music performance by Bash the Trash, playing instruments made out of reused and repurposed materials.

Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center Presents International Art Show

National/International Art show at Liz Long Gallery in North Lawndale right here in Chicago opens this Saturday, April 11 with a reception from 1-4 p.m. This unusual gallery is located on the first floor of Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center at 1957 S. Spaulding Ave. The artists in the show are from the Netherlands, Mexico, Morocco, Turkey, France, Holland & several U.S. states. The exhibit is called 'Artists from Anywhere but Illinois.' In an effort to support artists trying to break into the Chicago art scene, who live in other states & other countries, this steppingstone gallery in the most unusual neighborhood for a gallery, offers an annual art show for people who live far away. Also, to encourage people to view art from other states & other countries, this non-profit organization offers a unique opportunity for local people to enjoy modern art from far away. For people in Chicago-land to see art by people in distant places helps people to connect with humanity & touch base with counterparts in other lands. A musician will play, refreshments will be available, & nice people abound! Located just 2 blocks west of the Kedzie stop on the pink line, this gallery is easy to get to at the corner of S. Spaulding & 21st street. With it's 'down-home' atmosphere & facilitated art discussions, the experience at Liz Long Gallery is a welcome reprieve for many who shy away from visiting galleries that seem stuffy & over priced. At Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center, the artworks are accessible & written narratives are on display to help viewers understand the art, know the artists better, & appreciate the art viewing experience. The curator is always on hand at opening receptions to help explain the art, introduce artists & their works. At this particular reception, one of the artists, Andy Frost of New Hampshire, travels to Chicago to give an artist talk to explain his large curious faces & why he refers to them as part of 'Las Meninas' after Picasso's and Velesquez's works. The non-profit organization, Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center has always been a little 'different', offering a variety of programing out of it's retreat building in North Lawndale for all of Chicago, & even all of USA & globally. It's art gallery program presents a new exhibit every 2 months either on a social justice theme, or featuring an under-represented population of people. It's art studio provides opportunities for people with & w/o a mental illness to make art side by side. CUARC has an off-site program called Have Studio Will Travel taking art-making & discussion programs to other sites with no programs like this. The organization has a 'nurture through nature' program in it's large garden. It's community public art by the people program is currently working on the Peace Parks of North Lawndale project- transforming vacant lots into beautiful parks. Youth Issues Youth Solutions is it's youth program focusing on peace initiatives & currently studying recycling to help educate the community at large about this important issue. CUARC operates a women's residence on it's second floor, housing women travelers from around the world in an affordable B&B environment of safe space.
