Disney Channel Announces December Programming Highlights

Disney announced today that for one week only, guests will have the opportunity to see Disney's upcoming 'Saving Mr. Banks,' starring Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks, in a state-of-the-art movie theater on the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, California, and then walk in Walt Disney's footsteps on a special tour of the famous lot. This limited engagement features one show daily at 7 p.m. from December 13th through December 19th.

Disney Channel debuts the first-ever extended episode of the Emmy Award-winning 'Mickey Mouse' cartoon shorts as part of a themed day of programming in honor of Mickey Mouse's birthday today, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 18 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT). The special seven-minute comedic cartoon titled 'Potatoland' finds Mickey, Donald and Goofy on a road trip to Idaho to fulfill Goofy's lifelong dream of visiting what he fondly remembers as Potatoland theme park. The short will be available on WATCHDisneyChannel.com, the WATCH Disney Channel app for smartphones and tablets, Disney.com and iTunes the day after the linear premiere.

The night's music will feature Dukas's The Sorcerer's Apprentice, best known for its appearance in Disney's animated film, Fantasia. The music brings to life the story of a wayward apprentice who bewitches a broom to carry his buckets of water for him, only to find that it can't be stopped and he floods his master's study.

When You Wish/The Story of Walt Disney. It is high time that the life and career of iconic artist/animator Walt Disney be honored artistically. Of course, his films all stand the test of time, but we know little about the man, his persona and the early years of struggle. Wouldn't it be assuring to learn that success even for a genius does not come easy? And just plain fun to find out where and how Mickey Mouse came about? Instead of a biopic, the producers have decided upon an original stage musical. Therein lies the biggest flaw. This new tribute is labeled/described as a Pre-Broadway production. Let's reflect a moment or two on what makes for a successful Broadway show. Disney's own The Lion King, from screen to stage, is a perfect example of that kind of huge success. It is a spectacle with grand theatricality, giant universal family conflicts and dynamite appeal in sight and sound to sustain long lines at the box office. As endearing as it is, this little musical When You Wish falls short in these respects... in spite of the fact that it has a dream cast and a superlative creative team. Now onstage through November 3 at the Freud Playhouse at UCLA, the show, nonetheless, does have a carload of merit. If Broadway is not the answer, it does deserve a place somewhere.

D23 Presents Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives, an exhibition which encompasses nearly 300 artifacts from nine decades of Disney history, opens at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI) today, October 16, 2013 (the actual 90th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company) and continues through February 17, 2014.
