BWW Review: BLASTED Searches for the Fuse

Director Lindsey Higgins has audio recordings of British and American politicians play before the action begins in the 60 Grit Theatre Company's production of Sarah Kane's 'Blasted.' Their stuffy proclamations set the stage for the 1995 play's exploration of some horrific clashes along the frontlines of the battle between the personal and the impersonal.

Pour Her Another Round! Bright Star's Hannah Elless Joins Latest Cast of SHAKESBEER

New York Shakespeare Exchange (NYSX), the company that popularizes Shakespeare for diverse, contemporary audiences in new and timely ways, stages its next "ShakesBEER" pub crawls in September.  Featured in the cast will be Broadway's Hannah Elless (recently of "Bright Star"). This new round of the community-building, immersive pub crawls takes place on consecutive Saturdays September 10 & 17, from 3pm to 6pm.  Tickets are $48 (includes four drinks, beer/wine/select cocktails).

THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN at South Bend Civic Theatre this August

From August 12th through the 21st, the South Bend Civic Theatre will feature the tradition of Irish storytelling in the Wilson Theatre with Martin McDonagh's The Cripple of Inishmaan. Director Jim Geisel takes the audience to an island off the western coast of Ireland in 1934. Robert Flaherty, a Hollywood director, arrives on the island of Inishmore to film 'Man of Aran.' As the word gets around, the young Cripple Billy aspires to be in the film as a way to escape his daily struggles.

Martin McDonagh's THE LONESOME WEST Opens August 6th

The Keegan Theatre closes out its record-breaking 19th season with Martin McDonagh's brutally funny dark comedy, The Lonesome West. Set in the tiny Irish backwater of Leenane, warring brothers Valene and Coleman live to torment each other, baiting and brawling over every petty grievance, from would-be girlfriends to cheap potato chips. Only Father Welsh, the local parish priest, will try to save them before their sibling rivalry explodes into a hilarious and brutal finish.

National Theatre Live to Broadcast THREEPENNY OPERA and DEEP BLUE SEA This Fall

National Theatre Live has announced international broadcasts of the Rufus Norris' National Theatre production of The Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, in collaboration with Elisabeth Hauptmann, in a new adaptation by Simon Stephens on Thursday, September 22, 2016; and, Carrie Cracknell's acclaimed National Theatre production of Terence Rattigan's The Deep Blue Sea on Thursday, October 6, 2016.

The Breadbox Theatre to Stage World Premiere of THE AWAKENING This Summer

The Breadbox presents the World Premiere of THE AWAKENING, adapted for the stage by Oren Stevens and developed with Ariel Craft, based on Kate Chopin's revolutionary novel. The Breadbox Artistic Director Ariel Craft (The Pillowman, Blood Wedding, 'Tis Pity She's a Whore) helms this stunning production, breathing new life into Chopin's feminist masterwork. THE AWAKENING plays July 29 through August 20 (press opening: July 30) at EXIT Theatre (156 Eddy St.) in San Francisco. Gus Krieger is a Los Angeles based writer-director-producer of stage and screen.  As writer-producer: "The Killing Room" (2009). Writer-director: "Ol' Stan Levid" (2007), "The Binding" (2016). Producer: "Would You Rather" (2012), "Fender Bender" (2016). As playwright: Deity Clutch (2011), Sherlock Through The Looking-Glass (2013), and Breaking Bard (2015), which took home the Spirit of the Fringe Award for Best Writing, out of 200+ shows. Tron Theatre Presents Martin McDonagh's THE LONESOME WEST

Tron Theatre Company presents Martin McDonagh's THE LONESOME WEST on July 6-23, with press performance on July 8. Martin McDonagh's bleak but blackly comic Leenane Trilogy made his name, and the plays have been celebrated all over the world. Tron Theatre Company previously staged The Beauty Queen of Leenane in 2001 (dir. Iain Heggie).

ART/WNY Announces Casts of AMERICAN IDIOT, THE UNDERPANTS & More

A great week of general auditions and callbacks for the 2016-17 season with 60+ talented individuals attending the two-night and three days of callbacks seeking to fill roles for all four ART/WNY productions. Maura Nolan, director for Halley Fieffer's HOW TO MAKE FRIENDS AND THEN KILL THEM, Jeffrey Coyle, director for Steve Martin's THE UNDERPANTS, Matthew LaChiusa, director for A BEHANDING IN SPOKANE and alongside Billy Horn, musical director for AMERICAN IDIOT, had the difficult decision to chose from all those who attended. Once the dust settled, two of the four shows have been fully cast with the other two in the process of finalizing cast lists.
