Photo Flash: 'Of Mice and Men' at Westport Country Playhouse

Westport Country Playhouse (Joanne Woodward and Anne Keefe, artistic directors, Jodi Schoenbrun Carter, managing director) will stage John Steinbeck's classic drama, 'Of Mice and Men,' directed by Mark Lamos. Peformances began October 7th and will run through November 1. Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962 and the Pulitzer Prize for his 1939 novel 'The Grapes of Wrath.' The production will honor the late Paul Newman, who was married to Westport's Artistic Director Joanne Woodward and who participated in many Westport Playhouse productions.

Plácido Domingo will sing the role of Maurizio in Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur on February 6, 10, 13, 21 matinee, 25, and 28 evening, 2009, replacing Marcelo Álvarez, who is now singing the title role in the Met's new production of Verdi's Il Trovatore. Marco Armiliato will conduct Adriana Lecouvreur, replacing Domingo, who was originally scheduled to conduct. The role of Maurizio in the February 17 performance is TBA.

If the old chestnut about life imitating art doesn't cross your mind a couple of times during A.R. Gurney's new comedy, Buffalo Gal, you may want to make a copy of The Cherry Orchard part of your subway reading this week. But brushing up your Chekhov isn't completely necessary to enjoy this funny little character study where the Russian playwright's story of the cultured aristocracy falling to the vulgar values of the middle class is replaced by a struggle for artistically conscious live theatre to survive while uninspired sitcoms rake in the bucks and offer immediate stardom.
